Didn't Socrates commit suicide using
hemlock after he was jailed? In effect,
one of the greatest thinkers EVER has
committed euthanasia.
Would you ask for a doctor assisted
suicide?

Um noooooo... Socrates did NOT commit
suicide (well there is a further argument
that I can get to later) Socrates was
sentenced to death by his peers in Athens
for corrupting the youth, believing in
false gods and other such charges. They
forced him to drink the hemlock juice.
However, there is another argument that
can be made about him committing suicide
(back me up if anyone can, my philosophy
is a bit rusty) At one point, while
Socrates was in jail, his friends were
going to help him escape, but he refused
to leave with them. Essentially, he argued
that by living in Athens, he had chosen to
abide by its rules, and if he had indeed
broken them, then he deserved his fate.
So, one could argue that by not escaping
from jail was an act of suicide, but in no
way was it a choice for him to drink the
hemlock juice.
...any philosophy majors to back this up?

For Me, Yes! Posted: 12-24-07 13:18pm
Hello,
People say very often to me:
don't try suicide again, because you will
suffer in the next life!
If is so, then I am for Euthanasia! For
myself!
There is help for me, but I don't get the
help. Not from Classic medicine. Not in
this country. For Traditional or any other
therapy I have no more money. I have lost
all because of strange pains they last for
very long time. The worst thing is, that
very few people and doctors believe, what
I am going through. They should have the
same hobby as I have. If you see one of my
hobbies, we know who is sick and who is
not.

No major but he took responsibility for
his actions. He is basically saying
consequences can be derived from your
actions.
It was all a power tool but I think he
did it more to make people question, to
continue questioning what is before us and
what was behind us. Socrates claimed
that we wanted everything that was not
simple, the perfect body, the perfect
offspring, money and fame, I think he may
have done what he did because more people
lsiten to a dead man than a live one.
So he walked into his own death when he
had a choice to escape.
It was either to accept defeat
Or he knew death would reap him more
benefits of his teachings.

The story is that hemlock was his death
penalty, but his friends came to rescue
him. Instead, he accepted his "crime" and
thus the punishment, to make people think
about what Diamondz said: life and ethics
aren't simple. He drank the hemlock even
though freedom was available. He could
have escaped and didn't. I also personally
believe he was supporting the justice
system while simultaneously martyring
himself to critique it.

I would only make use of doctor assisted
suicide if I was incredible pain which had
no chance of being stopped. Socrates
accepted a death sentence, and has no real
relevance to euthanasia.

Old topic, but an interesting one. Yes, I
would have an assisted suicide. My motto:
no pain, no pain.
