Q: Artaries - Bleeding

Is is possible for an artary to break spontaneously?
One early morning, I had to "get up", and not wanting to really wake up I sat down, in the dark, and did what I had to do. At that time I discovered that I was all sticky around my ankle, turned the light on and found the floor covered in blood, the carpet was saturated in blood, and from a small whole on the side of my ankle the blood was spurting out, like a fountain. It took about 15 to 20 minutes to stem the blood enough to put a pressure bandage on. - It has since healed, but I am now afraid that it might happen again.
I did not scratch, nor did I hit anything on the way to the bathroom.
