Q: Planning the Big 1st Birthday Party

I'm starting to plan Ava's 1st birthday. We've decided to have it at my mom's house, she has tons of parking and a huge space for the party. They have a 2 story house, they live at the top and the bottom is a garage. It's huge! It's a 4 car garage, but they recently closed one side and put a French door. So there's only one garage door. Anyway, hopefully it's not that cold or cold at all. When I had her it was hot outside and a week later it was freezing. We have crazy weather here. Anyway, back to the party.
We'll have it there and it'll be halloween themed. We'll have pumpkin painting, grab bags of candy, and all the kids will get to dress up in their costume. We'll have a space walk too. I don't like those, but Jesse insisted on getting one for the big kids. WHATEVER!
So, what else is there to do besides pumpkin painting??
I bought all the plates, cups, and napkins last year after Halloween on sale. It's not too halloweeny, it's more fall. It's blue and orange plates with a scarecrow holding a sign that reads, "Pumpkins 25 cents". It's cute! I'll get a pumpkin cake made. We'll have hot dogs and chili to eat. I'll buy a bunch of pumpkins and fall leaves to decorate.
Any ideas are appreciated!

wow, you're going all out!

how old are the kids going to be? i was going to suggest bobbing for apples, but that's obviously not for little kids. what about that game where you tie donuts to strings and the kids have to eat them off?

I think being that it's her 1st b-day, I'll stick to the spacewalk for the older kids, pumpkin painting for the younger ones, bubbles for the babies to watch. I'll do grab bags for all of the kids. My mom's friend makes awesome candy and caramel apples too. She makes a lot of cool things for parties, she'll be a big help.

for the donuts, you just tie them to strings and hang them from somewhere (a beam or a tree branch or something) and the kids have to eat them off the string using just their mouth. it's funny to watch them try to catch it.

we're just doing a family thing for finn, we'll go to my parents' for dinner and my brothers and sister-in-law will be there. i'm going to make a tradition of making his cake each year, even though i've never decorated a cake before. this year i'm going to try something easy, like elmo's face. i already have all his presents because i bargain shop throughout the year.

do you know what you're going to get her for gifts?

ok its like...how do i explain it
you have 10 spaces (like 10 chairs or something) set up in a circle
each chair or whatever you use has a number on it

you play music for however long you want and the kids walk around a circle until the music stops. when you stop the music you draw a number from a bucket or something (so if you have 10 chairs then # 1-10 in the bucket)
and whoever is sitting at the number you pick wins a cake or cookies or whatever other goodies you want!!!

Oh, sounds like a lot of fun! in my opinion fall is a great time to have a party. I love halloween. My next born child WILL be a fall baby Very Happy

that sounds like a fun party, she is a lucky baby. how about face painting? even the little ones might like that. maybe having someone dressed up in a costume too, as long as it's not too scary for them, lol. maybe the person who is blowing bubbles for them and painting their faces. maybe they could blow up balloons for the kids too. or, they could get a cd with kids songs and lead the kids in some songs with actions. or you could just hire a clown because that's basically what i just described, lol.

decorating cookies with icing is a fun one that little ones can do too. you can even put the orange icing on for them and just let them put on sprinkles and chocolate chips or gummi bears maybe. if those are safe for 1 year olds. i dont know if there are any candies that are safe for babies to eat. those tiny marshmallows maybe? or their moms or dads can help them use squeeze bottles to decorate the cookie with coloured icing and just skip the candy. you can just get those slice and bake cookie things that come premixed and bake them for the party.

that's all i can think of.

I love your idea for a halloween party. The face painting is a good idea. My friend did that at her baby's 1st b-day for the big kids and it was a hit. she did a really good job to.

I also like the donut idea. I hate to say it, but since you are having it in a garage, how about a finger painting area for the little ones. Let them go to town and then hose em down! My niece has loved finger paint since she was about a year old.
