I think I might want to go on birth control. There are so many out there and I want to know what is right for me. I am terrified of hypodermic needles and such though. I am underage so I can't go by myself but there's a family planning clinic near my house I can go to, do you think it's safe to get it there? Any suggestions? Also, can someone please tell me some of the different methods of birth control? Thanks.

You can't really pick what kind of birth control you go on.. The doctor asks you questions and chooses from there what type would be the best for you.. I would think that the family planning clinic would be a safe choice.. And really helpful as your underage. As for the different types of birth control there is the pill (of course) and depo-provera (which is a needle you get every 4 months or so (also you dont' get your period during these four months)), and the patch (which you wear on a certain part of your body, and you change it every week)... If you think that remembering to take a pill every day at the exact same time would be too hard for you, talk to a doctor about one of the other options..

....Even though the website I gave is for a specific type of birth control they will still have info that im sure you could use, as all of the oral bc pills follow the same rules

Thanks a lot! Well...I can't do the whole needle thing, I get very...I don't know how to put it... It'd be nice not having my period for 4 months though... Anyways if I go to a family planning clinic, I might not have a choice, will i? I think i'd be pretty good taking the pill every day at the same time, I adapt to things like that very quickly when I need to. Oh also, I have another question...Is it true that if someone takes birth control for a prolonged amount of time they can become infertile?

No thats not true. But it is true that after coming off some birth control, like the shot, it can take up to 2 years to conceive. But this is just your body re-adjusting. You would not be infertile. And you do have some say in which method you would prefer. They can't tell you that you will get this and not that. I am going on the shot after I deliver and I told my doctor that after looking into my options that was the method I wanted and she said ok. Taking a pill at the same time everyday would be too much for me to remember! Oh and the shot is every 3 months, not every 4.

Also with the depo shot, you may or may not get your period. There are no guarantees. Some women have there period for the whole three months!!! So do not pick depo for that reason. Your doctor will not put you on anything that he/she feels you should not be on, but you definately do have a choice as to what type of birth control you go on.
I would highly recommend the pill at least as a starting point. If you get the shot and have a bad reaction, you just have to deal with it for three months. But if you get put on a pill with a bad reaction, you can switch to a different pill that does not bother you.
If you do not want to mess with your hormones there is always the diaphram. But whatever you choose, don't forget to use condoms!!!
