I think this is a good one to debate on the proper way to potty train,
my friend when ive been at her house has her daughter sit on the potty but she wont let her leave until she goes and sometimes she sits in there crying and i feel bad it shouldnt be a negative experience it should be exciting. I am reading a book the potty training answer book i find it very informative, it has all the readiness signs not just physical but verbal and emotional and cognitive.
Potty training should be exciting , i was watching the view one day and elizabeth was talking about potty training her daughter and a potty song when they go potty
"(name) went pee on the potty" sing it over and over and dance and clap, it seems to get them all excited about going pee on the potty.
Also like reward systems. are they a good idea or not? Some say yes some say no, but what are your reasons?

Well, I didn't get fully potty-trained until I was pre-school aged. I saw the boy down the hall get to go to school and I wanted too as well. My mom said I couldn't until I went pee in the toilet and didn't wear trainers anymore. So I did. lol.

My brother was trained in a similar way... we moved to a new apartment and my mom said "George, there are no diapers in this house, so you'll have to use the potty..." and he went "Ok!".

i have this supernanny book and she was talking about how the timing of potty training is extremely important. i didn't pay that much attention to that part of the book because i'm a ways off from having to worry about it. but she said there is a point the child has to reach where they are physically able to control their body functions and trying to do any potty training before can be worse than a waste of time. it can make it harder to teach them later. just thought i'd throw that in there, i can't remember all the details, i'll have to read it again.

That sounds so tramatic to have a child sit there till they do something.
I would praise them for even just sitting on there.
my now 4 year old was soo afraid of the potty. So when he finally was sitting on the potty chair We were both soo excited.
HE was potty trained in 2 weeks... i believe it was 2 reasons,.. he was ready and i didnt force him to do so.

I though would take him every hour at first.. and give him a book to sit on the toilet with... we would read one book. eventually he was peeing on there.

In our family we do rewards. When my niece was begining to potty train we made a huge deal and went out and bought panties and clapped and fussed whenever she wanted to try. I also am a big believer in waiting until the toddler is ready. Do any of your friends wear diapers? Nope.. every child is different and ready at a different time. I think its a waste of time and energy if they arent ready.
