What is your opinion on breeding domestic animals?

At a glance, it seems cute. For example, they are breeding cats to look like tigers now, it is called the toyger (toy tiger). Just google it and you'll see what I mean.

But when you really think about it, there are already so many animals looking for a home, why breed and breed until you finally get what you want? What purpose does it serve... is it a hobby? What happens to the ones that don't come out looking the way you wanted them to?

I have a pet, and I'll assume he was bred, seeing as he was a store bought cckatiel, but you can hardly go to an adoption center and say you want to adopt a bird... and he only cost me $65... the toyger is estimated to be in the $1000's.

As for my opinion, let's just say I've never had a purebred dog or cat and am just fine with them not having a certificate/pedigree and not paying $1500 for one.

I agree. I wanted a dog so I looked around. The cheapest ones were like $900.00. I personally don't care if they have papers or not. I think they should just stop breeding (cross breeding) animals unless somehow it leads to a cure for something.

breeding is not wrong
however since the aniaml popultaion is way over what it needs to be i think it should be stopped
80% of the dogs that die in shel;ters and get put to sleep are mutts
why? because these "purebred" dogs are all that some people care about
so a mutt or a mix has basically zero chance of makeing it out when they come in

town lake animal shelter in austin texas euthinizes 80 dogs a day
80!!! thats just ONE animal shelter in ONE city

I will personally never buy a purebred animal. I will always buy shelter pets, that way I never contribute to the overpopulation problem.

Any animal should be loved or have the chance to be loved ... at the end of the day - we are all animals - no matter what or who we look like ...
(unless you're a mouse - I don't like them - but they still deserve to be loved.... just keep them away from me) eeekk Laughing Embarassed Wink

I dont think there is any reason to keep breeding new looks, or species, races, what ever you want to call them of animals, although i have a pet from the pound, and i tell you i will NEVER get another one, he is dumb, and wasnt house trained (still not sure if he is). i dont mind paying a high price for a dog that i like, but then again i would be paying close to 2 grand, as i prefer large breeds.

I think it's strange, really. I don't think I'd ever breed one of our animals. It's cute and fun and all, but there just aren't enough people to take care of these animals. We got our cat, Wendy, fixed ASAP and we'll always do the same with any other pet we have.

I never buy a dog. We either go to our SPCA or rescue shelter for one. I dont believe in buying a pure-bred. There are so many dogs/cats out there that need homes, that I am not going to pay someone to keep breeding them.
Our current dog; we found. My wife was in her truck on a backroad when she saw a puppy(1 month...maybe) with no collar, on the side of the road walking. No houses around. We kept her. The best dog we ever had.

Awesome, milletics; glad to read this.

I have eight dogs, and eleven cats, and all of them are rescues. I know we would have more if we had more physical space and resources!

We have so many animals because so many people don't take care of them. Breeding is ridiculous; and should be very, very limited, and it should be very, very expensive to buy a designer dog.
