Self Inducing Labour
Posted: 07-25-07 06:56am

so, i was at my last prenatal class yesterday and there was only one other couple left in the class with us. the woman is 32 weeks and she kept saying that she wanted the baby out now. apparently she had an early labour scare so she thought it would be okay if she did some things to induce labour since the baby had tried to come out on it's own earlier. the nurse kept telling her no, it's not good for the baby, there are too many risks at 32 weeks. but the woman kept insisting that the baby would be fine because most premie babies are okay anyway and besides, she was so uncomfortable. the nurse was trying to be nice but i could just see her wanting to shake her head at this woman. i can't understand her either. i know some of what babies go through when they are born too early and i know what it feels like to have a tube in your throat, it hurts like hell. i would never think of putting my baby through that if i could help it. no matter how uncomfortable i got.

anyway, i saw on another thread, some women arguing about inducing labour and how safe it is for baby if you do it before you reach your actual due date (or even after)?. do we really need to be that much in control of what's going on? is it selfish or only natural that a woman would do anything she can to get the baby out so she can feel comfortable again? is it any different for a woman to make that call on her own than for the doctor to do it for her with drugs? or should we just wait and let nature take it's course and stop trying to control it?

(not talking about medically necessary induction)

I think it's incredibly selfish to try to self-induce at 32 weeks because the pregnant mom is "uncomfortable". The baby might be okay, but labor will not progress well if the baby isn't ready to come out, so the woman would be putting herself at an increased risk of needing a c-section if successful at inducing.

Plus, doctors screw up the due dates ALL THE TIME, so the baby could very well be only 30 weeks.

Sure if you're "overdue" and the baby feels very low in your pelvis and you've been having occassional mild contractions then go ahead - have sex, nipple stimulation, go for a long walk, eat spicy food but nothing that can negatively affect the baby/cross the placenta barrier (i.e. no castor oil).

Even at 42 weeks I wouldn't consent to artificial induction and I will seek a birth attendant who will not insist on induction or interfere with natural labor. Some women just take longer to "cook" babies.

I wouldn't do it, no matter how uncomfortable I was, without medical reason to do so. With my first i had to be induced with Pitocin (horrible!) because of my blood pressure being 198/101. With my second, I was absolutely miserable, but I just did all the little natural things like nipple stim, ankle rubbing, Evening Primrose oil, and sex after I was 38 weeks. I don't know why doctors are always so anxious to have women deliver "on time" either. It makes me nuts. I believe things go better if they are allowed to take their own course (provided there aren't any medical reasons to do so early). My frined's baby was 8 weeks early and spend a month in NICU. Their bill is over 100,000 bucks.

32 weeks is stupid, pregnancy lasts an average of 40 weeks for a reason. Fair enough yes it is horrible during the last few weeks, i tried nipplestimulation and had a membrane sweep after i was 40 weeks but nothing happened and Mika ended up being born 11 days late, a baby will come when it's ready and how would she feel if something she tried worked and that poor baby died as a result? Just because most babies are fine after being born premmie doesn't mean that all of them are

You really should see your midwife and discuss your options if you do go anything over i think it is 14-20 days passed your due date the placenta starts to degrade and can poision both you and your baby.
I fully agree with everything else you said having experienced twins born at 30 weeks i honestly can not see how anyone could willingly put their little one through premature birth just for the sake of their own comfort hell no i am currently 7 weeks pg now and beleive me this one is staying in as long as possible lol i need the peace

I have no idea hun thats why i sugested she discuss with her midwife i only know that over here(uk) the hospital don't like to leave you overdue for long as the placenta starts to degrade.

I would hate to be so far over due how the hell did you cope it's bad enough full term did you have a big baby?

i'm thinking maybe they weren't as accurate at dating the gestation back then. these days they use ultrasound and can be more accurate at the date, but even still it's not %100. i'm not sure what to think about that whole not letting it go 2 weeks overdue idea. it worries me but i wonder how common it is for the baby to just decide not to come out on its own. why would that happen? i'm sitting here two days overdue and having these awful thoughts about club foot and deteriorating placenta and worrying myself for nothing. i think we put too much emphasis on calendars when these things just don't care about weeks or due dates. i don't like that i feel stressed and anxious about being overdue because of the 'risks' i keep reading about. plus, people won't stop calling and asking me if i've had the baby yet. i appreciate their concern and all that but i just keep telling them "don't you think we would call you if something happened??" lol.

lol..
you just brought an interesting point up in my noggin...
what did people do before we had dr's. and ultrasounds and EDD?...
they just waited patiently until the baby decided to come out..
i know some people used caster oil......but.... i heard that's not healthy..
i think the best thing to do is just wait until your baby is completely ready..
and see what your dr. says at the appt. tomorrow...
hoefully your baby isn't stubborn and decides to meet the world soon!!
i'll be praying for a quick delivery for you!!

They just waited.

If you are too overdue your provider starts worrying about the placenta, a simple ultrasound can tell whether or not your placenta is breaking down. Don't worry youself about being over due (btw, that's why I have NOT asked you about that on purpose Wink ). My midwife told me once "nobody ever stayed pregnanat forever you know". LOL It just feels like you will! People freaked out on me telling me what a big baby I was going to have bla bla bla. THese things are truly not helpful, despite people's best intentions!

diamond splinter - thanks for the information, but I'm not pregnant.

Someday if/when I am I will discuss with my midwife when being overdue actually becomes a risk to the baby's health, and if that risk is significant. I plan on ensuring that I choose a birth attendant who does not insist on artificial induction at any point because of timing only. If we had an u/s and it showed the placenta was breaking down (or something), then we'd discuss risks of not inducing and risks of inducing at that point.

Assuming I have a low-risk pregnancy I won't be going anywhere near a hospital at any point in my pregnancy! My blood pressure goes up just thinking about a hospital.

Yes, in the old days, women had no choice but to wait for their babies to arrive of their own accord but maternal and foetal deaths were also much higher then.

Thats just wrong to try to do self induce labor at 32 weeks. That woman might as well wait until she's 37 weeks. Geez my one friend tried doing that when she was 35 weeks. She used castrol oil which turned out bad for her in the long run and it didnt induce her labor.

I tried to self induce my labor around 37 weeks. I just used the natural ways of doing self induced labor. Like Stimulating my nipples and having sex. And I had my daughter at 38 weeks exactly.
