At what age do you think it is appropriate
for children to drive? Should there be
some sort of transitioinal period where
they have restrictions such as nobody else
in the car, or not after dark? Should
driver's ed be required? Should schools
be required to offer it? Whaddyathink?
Also, what kind of cars do you think teens
should be driving, particulalry when they
first get their license? Should they be
required to pay for any part of the
vehicle/insurance?

okay
i started driving at age 14.. i had to
have someone OVER the age of 18 in the car
with me whenever i was driving..
and IF i got caught w/o someone OVER the
age of 18 with me.. i lost my license
until i was 18...
at age 15 i got what we call a "7 to 7" i
could drive anywhere from 7am to 7pm as
long as someone age 16 or over was in the
car with me...
i could drive to school, work, or church
alone...
and then at age 16 i could drive anywhere
alone...
this gave me great experience instead of
just handing me a license and saying GO
GET 'EM TIGER!!
also my school REQUIRED driver's ed...
i was driving a '99 mustang when i was 14
(year 2003)...
and bc i was young i was not able to get a
job therefore had no money to pay the
insurance, tags, or taxes...
as of right now i'm driving an '07
mustang...and since my parents paid cash i
am responsible for insurance, tags, and
taxes on it...
**not looking forward to september when my
insurance is due...$800 ::Shivers::**

I think it depends on the kid. I'm
personally not in favor of giving a child
the right to a 3000 pound weapon if they
are not mature enough to handle the
responsibility. Some kids can get their
license at 16 and do a great job with it.
Others should probably not get theirs
until they are 30.
I think parents should try to encourage
their children to get a car that scores
highly in crash test ratings. Putting an
inexperienced driver in a corvette or
another kind of sports car is
irresponsible, not only for their
children, but for the public in general.
IMO I also feel that people respect their
cars a lot more if they have to work to
earn the money to buy it as opposed to
having a car handed to them.
I absolutely think their should be
restrictions for the first 6 months, like
no cell phones, no passengers that are not
family members or over the age of 18. I
think kids with a new license should have
a curfew unless they are driving home from
work, or possibly a school sponsored
activity and if they break any of their
restrictions or get a ticket for anything
they should lose their license for 6
months for the first offense and when they
get it back their time starts over and the
next offense should be 1 year and so on.
All kids should have to take driver's
education and then be required to drive
for so many hours with a learners permit
before they can test.
I would gladly put my daughter on my auto
insurance, but whatever the difference in
price was, she would be expected to pay.
I hear of and see so many kids that take
their license for granted, and
unfortunately too many kids lose their
lives because of it.

I got to drive on a back road in my
grandmas car when i was 12. mind you that
my grandma made me go really slow the
entire time and it was a backroad where
nobody was close and there were no houses
ect.
i got my permit when i was 15 and didn't
drive alone and when i was 16 i got my
license. i never had to take drivers ed,
and personally i doubt we could afford it
if i had to. im buying my own car and will
definitely be taking great care of it.

what?!
We can't drive til 17 over here, and it
takes loads of lessons and a stupidly
difficult test at the end of it PLUS
driving theory and hazard perception. With
all of this, I can't afford to drive

I think my only comment to this is, don't
force the kid who's not ready. I was 20
when I finally got my license, but by then
I finally had a need and a want for one. I
had the drive (pun intended) and the
maturity to get it and drive safely.

With a rash of teen driving deaths (kids
16/17 y/o driving) in my area, I think
it's time to up the age and/or change the
way teens get their licenses. A student
of mine just lost two friends because the
driver in their car thought he was cool by
going 50mph over the speed limit.
Granted, not all kids are as immature, but
most 16 year olds (sorry) have an
invulnerability complex.

I didn't have a licence until i was 18.
But not cause i didn't want one, but cause
my mom didn't think i needed one, and
didn't want to teach me how to drive. We
never had money to get me a car any how so
i said why the heck should i have a
licence. But once i had my daughter i had
to get a car so i could get back and forth
to work. The age limit here is 14 with an
adult. And so on like the post before. I
havn't really seen to many crazy drives
that are 14+. I have seen more bad drivers
that are 80+ lol
