I Wanna Give Up Smoking

User Profile
Hi Guys

I'm a smoker - I smoke 10-20 ciggies a day ...
I've heard that Zyban ( I think that's how it's spelt) is good for giving up smoking, although I know it's a known anti-depressant.
IS there anyone out there, that has any info on these pills, and if there are any suggestions, I have will-power, but this little annoying idiot in my head is being difficult...

Hey There
Hi again Ginger. Zyban works well. Chantix is a new one that works also. Wellbutrin is another one. I can tell you that I have tried Wellbutrin and it was ok. Chantix is just ok. I am in a support group that meets Mons/Fris and it helps alot. I have been smoke free for 96 hours now and no matter what they tell you- It's hard. I want to yell, bite and scream. But I know it's good for me to quit. If you need any help, feel free to contact me. It is tough but someone to talk to helps ALOT..
Sheer will is the only way to beat it!

I've given myself a date .. a goal ... and a reason..
the date ... 23rd December (my step-sons birthday)
the goal ...to do it and do it for good.
the reason ... cos my step-son asked me to, cos he doesn't want me to die. So on his birthday, I can tell him, I've kicked the habit for good.. Embarassed Crying or Very sad

I gotta get started NOW, and If I keep a piccie of him close to me, I will conquer it, I know it's gonna be hard, and I will be a cranky b****, but then, as long as I got smiles, I will get there ... keep me smiling, and I'll stop smoking ........ hence why I've started posting 'good vibes' in the volunteer's section .... I hope that anyone who also wants to give it up, will join in ..... I don't think I'll be doing the pills now, but then, never say never eh .... oohhh - I've gone all emotional !!

Smoking is awful awful. Cigarette companies are on to us. they know how addicted we are! I finally quit-for good 2 years ago. i had quit before for almost 2 years, and then things got stressful and I had ...just...one...It took another 2 years for me to realize that I can't have just one. I am like an alcoholic when it comes to cigarettes. I don't really think about it much anymore, except for once in a while when others are smoking and my children are in bed. But I know I can't ever have one again. I just resigned myself to this fact and it has been working out pretty well for me. It is soooo hard. But you can do it! (It causes degenerative disc disease in the back, did ya know? Wink )

I just know that a strong vibrant woman like you is much more powerful than a cigarette! I know it!

I'm ready to give it up to, but I have no access to medicines or patches etc. I've been goin a pack aday for almost 3 years now, and I gotta quit cold turkey. Every time I try to quit the thought of never having 1 more cigarette ever again scares me, and I fall for the "just one more" routine every time.

Thanks babe, yes I did know about the disc disease, Embarassed Crying or Very sad I sooo want to kick it, and I know I'm strong enough to kick it, but there's something in my head that keeps naggin at me ---have one, have one ... I've been checking on the 'smiles' in the volunteer forum... and I can't smoke and type at the same time, so posting does me good, I feel good, then the naggin in my head 'gives up' for a while... then it starts again .. I will do it, and I've given myself a goal date to do it by... I keep my promises, and I've promised Paul I will do it...

to All
We can all help each other out. The meds. work for some- but the truth is that NOTHING will take it away. It is sheer will. Think about something for a minute....
Did you know smoking causes withdrawls (called stress) which causes us to keep smoking to relieve the stress?
It is a viscious cycle. I've gone 96 hours, and although it ain't easy- I'm doing it! If you can't get meds or gum- then you're gonna have to tough it out. We are all together in this and it is the best thing we can do. It will give us our freedom back. Sliiyakchik has done it- and good for her! But she's right- there is no 'one more'. It is hard, I am cranky and munchy, but it needs to be done. Do it because you want to- not because you have to. It is not about 'liking' it. It is about tolerating it. Your body is adjusted to inhaling poison (and smoke and tar) and now thinks it needs it. Quit and free yourself! Your body will thank you. Stick together here and we can beat it.

If you try and still have a slip-up...it is ok. Smoking took practice to learn and it will take practice to stop. Keep going, one hour at a time guys. It will be wonderful to not HAVE to smoke, or leave the party early, or ride alone in your car, etc...etc...

I want ALL of you who want to quit to write down 5 PERSONAL reasons for quitting. Not 'my mom/wife' reasons, but reasons YOU WANT to quit. Keep those pasted on your screen so you see them all of the time. It does help...

When you think of quitting smoking as " Giving it up" it can be hard.

I used to think that quitting smoking was very hard, but after learning about nicotine addiction. I realized that it wasn't really quitting smoking that was hard, but quitting believing that a cigarette did something for me that was hard.

Once I removed that thinking. Quitting smoking became fairly easy.

Please don't be offended by that statemnet. I'm not trying to make light of quitting. I have tried many many times and all of those attempts were complete torture for me.

This time though I learned about nicotine addiction and the mechanics of it. What this did was take away the credit that I used to give cigarettes.

This made quitting much much easier to do.

I read a post a couple of years back about someone talking about the term "Giving up smoking" and they said saying giving up smoking is like saying giving up cancer. You don't "give up" cancer. You get rid of it. The same holds true for cigarettes.

I quit smoking over 3 years ago and I can promise you that life is so much better not having to smoke anymore!

I have a quit meter and it says that I have saved over $11,000.00 by not smoking! That is some serious money being wasted just so I could simply relieve an anxiety that the previous cigarette created. An anxiety that should have never been there.

Thank You
Hi Eric

Thanks for your wisdom words of encouragement, I gave myself a quitting day which was tomorrow ...actully where I've geared myself up, and got my head in a positive state, and that I haven't had my 'usual morning smoke' ... I really don't want it ... and if I take each day comes, and keep this 'nagging' thing in my head in control, I know I will beat it ...

Jerry and myself, in this forum, have started 'positive vibes' by making up songs about it ... see in ' Giving up is hard to do' if anything, keeping my fingers busy by typing (cos I can't smoke and type at the same time) is actually helping me.

I hope that others use this theroy and join in .. give support to those about to fall off the wagon, and generally have a laugh and keeping it positive.

You can join in too, you don't have to make the words rhym...

I have tried to quit a few times now, and always the next time it will be it, the final of all trying to quit. But have noticed that chewing a gum, having all sorts of candies around, helps a lot about not thinking of a cigarette, makes your mouth busy and helps focusing on other things you do. Maybe you gonna gain some weight by the way, but it's worth trying.

Quitting Smoking
I realized too that quitting smoking has alot to do with the ideas set forth in your brain, it's your brain telling you to smoke, telling you it smells and tastes good, YOU have to keep telling yourself NO, not even one puff of a cigarette and you'll be right back at it. I quit 8 years ago and I can tell you stress still wants me to have one but I WILL NOT give in to it!!
