I just had an ultrasound and the baby's bladder was grossly enlarged. Doc said that it is some kind of obstruction and hopefully will right itself within next 2 weeks. I have to go back to check in 2 weeks. In the meantime had integrated blood work to check for chromosomal abnls. I googled this anomaly and found it can possibly be liked to Trisomy 18 and/or can lead to lung malformation (under development) and kidney failure ) Dr. also told me about the kidney failure being worst case scenario.

Does anyone know the percentage of this resolving on its own? I am so hoping that it does. The bladder was very large though and I am scared.

Please someone reply.

Enlarged Fetal Bladder / obstruction 19.4 Weeks
Sorry to hear about it. My wife had a stage II ultrasound and found exactly the same thing. It's just that the doctor did not mention that it will correct itself and mentioned that prenatal shunt may be necessary if water decreases, but we are going to have a revisit in a week. We are both very worried about it like you. Would you mind telling me more about your experience in the follow-ups? We'd really appreciate it. We are in Philadelphia and we heard the children's hospital is good at it. Best wishes to you and your baby!

Hi all,

We're going through the same thing. The outlook is generally pretty good though. The best study out there shows that " there is spontaneous resolution of the megacystis in about 90% of cases." Read more here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1270474 0

Enlarged Bladder
Hello,
I am 14 weeks pregnant . I went for my first trimester screening and found that my baby has Enlarged bladder. They mentioned it to be Lower urinary tract Obstruction. They did my CVS to find any further chromosomal defect. I am yet to receive the result. I have been looking in the inetrent for people with similar experience..Even they mentioned to me to wait till the aminoitic fluid is less..Maybe it will resolve on its own..otherwise placing a shunt will be our option. I know that you guys wennt thru the same process. Please can you share your line of action and experience. Both me and DH are pretty scared about it ..this is our first child and all these things are new to us. Please do let me know your experience..Thanks a lot

don't worry too much
My wife is going to give birth to a health boy! The bladder issue resolved by itself in about 1-2 weeks! I just want to tell you that do not worry too much. I had so many friends telling stories about abnormalty afeter the first full Ultrasound check, almost none of them turned out to be problem. We learned our lesson, which is not to worry about early sign of problems. Doctors tend to be conservative and want to avoid trouble, so you pretty much will hear the worst thing happening - but in reality, as I said, almost none of them will happen.

Just relax - you don't even need a amniocentensis.

update requested
Please can anyone give me an update to your complications. We are currently going through the same problems 17 1/2 weeks pregnant, enlarged bladder, loss of amniotic fluid. A shunt was an option as well as fetal surgery. I need to know if anyone had a positive outcome. We are devastated and do not know whether or not to end the pregancy. We don't want our child to have a life of complications. Please Respond as a Amnio is not an option at this time (becasue of the lack of fluid).

enlarged bladder
I am sorry to hear of your digonosis. On Jan 22 I went in for my nuch. trans test and was told the babys heart was no longer beating. The said the baby had a grossly enlarged bladder and there was no outlet for urnie. The babys belly was filled with fluid and they said the fuid may of put pressure on the heart causing it to stop. I was 14 weeks along and have to have a D&E. I will pray for you to have a better outcome than I did. I urge you to pray as much as you can and hope for the best, but prepare for the other outcome as well. I had an ultrasound a week prior to this one and there were no signs of a problem. I am devistated and resarching every thing I can as to why this happend. You are in my prayers.

Obstruction
Oh my...the exact thing happened to me. At 14 weeks too. It was like you were telling my story. It happened to me June 2009. We had DNA of the baby done and showed a partial deletion of chromosome 16q and the research I have got has been related to rare cases of hyposidias. Also our baby was a girl Smile But we now have a beautiful one year old healthy daughter. Our angel is in our hearts every day.

I too was given the diagnosis that my 13 week old fetus had a very large bladder. The Doc. told me to come back in 2 weeks as it may resolve on its own. If not, I would have to have fetal surgery or it would die. I went back and today and it cleared up on its own, I found out I will be having a healthy boy. I prayed so much and tried to think positive although it is so scary. Anyone in this situation shoud do the same as these things often fix themselves with time.

Enlarged bladder at 12 week ultrasound
We had the same thing happen to us. We went in last week for the 12 week ultrasound and were informed that the baby's bladder was enlarged. It measured 10 mm & anything over 7 mm is considered enlarged. The Dr totally freaked us out and gave us a very grim prognosis. We spent lots of time researching it on the Internet over the weekend and it's very scary and overwhelming. We went in for a CVS as soon as we could to see if there was some chromosome abnormality, which can cause bladder outlet obstruction in rare cases. We went for the CVS yesterday and they did an ultrasound first and the bladder looked normal. It measured at 4 mm. We were SOOOO relieved.

Devastated
I just went in for my 20 week ultrasound and was so excited about finding out if it was a boy or a girl. Instead I was having my ultrasound pictures faxed to specialist and immediate appointments set to see another doctor at a different hospital who specializes in this. The babies bladder is 3 times the size of the baby, there is hardly any amniotic fluid and after doing an amnio, the doctor withdrew 320cc of fluid from the babies enlarged bladder. The doctor told me that there is a blockage of some kind. After withdrawing all that fluid yesterday, I go back in 4 days for them to do another amnio. The doctor said that if the test results show that urine is being produced after my second amnio then there may be kidney function. If there is kidney function, then we will discuss where to go for the shunt procedure. If the kidneys are not functioning, then he said the baby will not make it. I am devastated. I have been researching this on the internet, and it seems as though people who have gone through this have had more positive results than negative when found before the 24th week of pregnancy. Although the doctors are cold and basically give me the speech about only a 10% chance that the baby will make it either way, after doing much research, I have decided regardless to have the child. There have been cases where the doctors said the baby would die shortly after delivery, and yet in some cases the baby came out completely fine. I think the power of prayer goes further than any technology a doctor can give us and that miracles can happen.

Enlarged Bladder 12 Weeks
We went for our 12 weeks ultrasound. Everything looked ok except the bladder. It is enlarged. They want me to do a CVS. I am terrified. I keep being told by others to wait and see if it clears then do amnio later because it is safer. I am torn. I am scared and I don't know what to do. I have been through so much to get to this point in my pregnancy; I don't want to lose it all now. Thank you all for posting. I would be grateful for any advice.

Enlarged bladder 14 weeks
So sorry to hear that all of you guys are going through this too, but thanks so much for sharing your experiences. We had a 12 week scan showing enlarged fetal bladder. Went back for scan at 14 weeks with specialist and problem was much worse (that was on Thursday April 2nd). Have another appointment at specialist unit for second opinion on condition on Monday 6th April. We weren't given a very good prognosis based on how much the bladder had grown in two weeks and the fact that it is putting a lot of pressure on little one's heart. We're preparing ourselves for the worst on Monday, while very much hoping for the best. I hope to be back online with good news in the week.

Enlarged Bladder 13 Weeks
I posted above about the 12 week ultrasound. I was so freaked out. We ended up at a specialist and the problem seemed to clear itself up this time. We are not out of the woods just yet, but I wanted to post something to hopefully give some of you hope. I thought we were going to lose the baby and did not sleep for days. I have never been more grateful for anything. We did not end up getting the risky CVS as the first doctor suggested. Instead the second doctor we saw for the second opinion finished the first trimester screening to see what our risk is and then maybe we will do amnio in a few weeks. I am so sorry for all of you who are going through this. All I can say is don't give up hope. Also, if you get an answer you really don't like, get a second opinion. I can not stress that enough. I believe they can even put a stent in the baby and save it if it gets bad. Hang in there.

Re: Enlarged fetal bladder - 12 weeks
I hope it clears itself up also. was it a key hole apperence??? If it doesn't clear up know that it has been caught very early which is very good and you should be able to intervene in the next few wks. But I pray that it clears itself up by the time your are 15 wks

Babies with PUV
Hi all,
I just want to reply to all of the mommy's who are going through the PUV diagnosis with their son. My son's PUVs were detected at 15 weeks. We wanted to continue the pregnancy despite recommendation from the doctors to terminate. He was given to us for a reason, and we felt it was not our place to decide his fate. We tried to qualify for intervention, but his kidneys were already too deteriorated. Matthew was born and died on March 8th, 2009. I'm sure you are all very scared as I was, but our son was such a HUGE blessing to our family. We had no idea what a positive impact our son could have on our family even though he didn't survive. I have never heard of a mother who regrets carrying her baby to term with a fatal diagnosis.
