Q: Stupid Crib Bumper...

i've never used our crib bumper and i don't really like the idea of bumpers. however, after waking up for the 317th time the other night because i heard finn bumping his head on the top of his crib, i decided it was time to put it in.

the stupid thing doesn't fit!

i'm annoyed because those crib sets are expensive and the only things i've used from it are the sheet and the skirt. oh, and the 1 valance that came with it. why would only 1 valance come in the set? don't most rooms have at least 2 windows?

this has been happening for a few weeks now, all night long and all during his naps i hear him bumping his noggin (he's a very active sleeper). it doesn't wake him or anything, i just feel bad for him. now i'm going to have to construct some homemade bumper of some sort and it's going to look lame.

well i just realized i'm taking my frustrations out on the wrong item. it's the crib's fault it doesn't fit. instead of slats on the ends, it has these decorative posts that are solid against the head and footboards so there's nothing to tie the corners of the bumper too.

i think i'll see if my mom can whip something up, like just a bumper for the headboard part. i don't need one that goes all the way around, he doesn't get his limbs stuck through the bars or anything.

I bought Jenny a cot bumper the day after she banged her head on the bars for the first time.. I knew it would happen again, she never ever stays still. It fits OK.. but the problem is the ties are all at the top of it, with none at the bottom.. so very often I'll find Jenny fast asleep under it!! Kinda defeats the object of the bloody thing...

Christian does the exact same . I put him in one position and does a complete 360 in 10 minutes. I put the bumper since day one and now its seriously serving its purpose , mind you, his doesnt exactly fit properly either. The issue is nowadays cribs are not standard anymore but the bumpers are.

How is finn lately? Does he has any teeth yet?

that's silly, zanny. i was going to suggest putting in upside down but then the top would probably just flop into the crib. can you tuck the bottom around the mattress?

sarah, i wish my bumper came in separate pieces, then there wouldn't be a problem. mine is one long piece that goes all the way around.

here's his crib, if there was 1 more slat on each end where the curvy posts are it would fit-

i was trying to figure out what to do and i realized he's probably only rolling into it and not clonking his head like it sounds. the piece of wood on the end rattled whenever i touched it so i think it sounds worse than it is. it doesn't seem to bother him or wake him so i'm just going to leave it alone (even though it wakes me a hundred times a night).

I tried that, but Jenny pulls it up again.. she's a little monkey if she doesn't fall asleep as soon as I put her down. She definitely bangs her head on the bars.. I found her right in the corner crying her eyes out with a red mark on the top of her head Sad

she pushes herself backwards into it.. silly baba. I try & make sure she's completely settled before tucking the bumper in now, though.

nancy! where have you been?

finn is great, still the perfect baby. he finally got his 2 bottom teeth a few weeks ago, one popped through and the other came up 3 days later. i thought i'd miss his big gummy smile but he looks so cute with his 2 bottoms! he is such a good boy and i cherish every minute i spend with him.

how's christian? you know you can't just come here and not post pictures!

I had the same problem with my crib bumper. I decided to try the adhesive-backed velcro. It worked wonders until my daughter got old enough to realize what fun sounds the velcro made when you pull the bumper pad off! By that time though, she didn't really need the bumper pad, so it worked out! If you decide to do this, when it comes time to take the velcro off, peel slowly and use some adhesive remover safe for furniture to get the residue off. Best of luck!

i have the same issue with ours, my kids prefer to stick limbs thru tho and fat little legs get stuck easy. someone needs to reinvent the crib bumper...

Dani, have you ever looked into getting tulle or netting from a fabric store to use in lieu of a crib bumper? That way Liam and Macy can't get their limbs stuck in between the slats, but if they smush their faces up against it they can still breathe through it!

I took Oni's out when she started crawling around.

babies can scoot up to it and suffocate.

They DO, though, have mesh bumpers that allow them to breathe if they do scoot up to it.

Oni eventually stopped bumping her head. It sounded like wood breaking on the monitor when she did it! which was horrible!

well macy is in a toddler bed so i dont have that problem with her, right now we are on vacation so hes in a pack in play. im thinking hes getting a toddler bed soon. thanks for the suggestion tho

all crib bumpers are made cruddy it seems, josephs was like that too, it ties at the top or something but it seemed like it was always falling over , if i had crib bumpers id prob sew on extra stringso n the bottom to to tie around , dunno why the geniuses didnt think of that to begin with when they made the things but eh. Joseph never had problems banging his head. but hes in a toddler bed now wich we put him in at 14 mths and hes been doing good. id unno when ill move to a toddler bed with jordynne though. but i prefer not to waste money on the crib bumpers they dont stay

i'm going to invent bumpers that you can put the ties wherever they need to be to fit your needs. i'm too lazy and can't sew, but i know exactly what i would do.

my mom's brilliant suggestion was to drill holes in the sides and put those eye screws in to tie them to. yes, mom, i'm going to drill holes into a $300 crib. nope, he can just bump his head.

actually, it seems since i posted this that he hasn't been doing it as often.

i feel like i should get in touch with someone who can sew so we can make a prototype. i might be on to something here... or maybe they already make them.

hehe if its already invented id like to know where they sell em at lol. or maybe make em so they can sorta slide up and down. they really need em with a tie on both ends not just the top, then they are flimsy and dont stay at all. i think i actually bought my bumper alone at babys r us it wasnt with a set. moms usually invent the easiest things like that sling towel for babies when u bathe em its easy to get em out without getting wet laying them on you the towel raps around your neck, a mom invented that. i suck at sewing also lmao i dont even own a sewing kit, i used to be able to use a sewing machine but its been years since i touched one of those. i would still make a prototype see how it holds up Smile

you know all of us at ehealth would buy one hehe
