Q: What Rights Do I Have?

I am 39 and pregnant. The father is really no help at all. I would like to know if anyone knows what my rights are in the state of Pennsylvania so far as support issues are concerned, particularly for prenatal care. Is he going to be made responsible for half of those bills once paternity is proven? If not proven until after the baby's birth, will the fees for prenatal care be retroactive?

are you two married? or had you been married? it doesn't sound like it, but i thought i would ask.

do you have your own health insurance? if not, i would apply for government care as soon as possible. i don't know what the state of pennsylvania offers as far as that goes, though. i'm from new jersey.

as far as what he is responsible for, i wish i could be of more help. those are great questions & i hope you receive helpful answers from people on this board. i would imagine, once paternity has been proven, he would be expected to pay some of the costs. if not, i would try my hardest to get him to give up his parental rights. you don't know what he'll do after the baby is born, whether or not he will want to play a role in his child's life.

good luck, sweetie. i wish you & your little one the best.

Thank you for your reply and good wishes.

No, we are not married. I don't know what he wants so I just need to make sure I am aware of my rights up front.

I hope I do get some good, sound advice from this forum, too!
