Spermicide is a decent backup method. I would not recommend it as your sole method of birth control due to its high failure rate.

Yes, you insert the spermicide before sex. Make sure you read the directions. The one that I used had to be inserted 15 minutes before sex.

The first time I used it, I did have some burning. I did not have burning after that first time though. After a couple of weeks of use, I got what seemed to be a urinary tract infection or something similar. Not sure if the two were related or if it was coincidence. It cleared up on its own after three miserable weeks, and I have not used the spermicide since.

It's really, really unlikely to get pregnant on the pill when used right. With condoms, your chances are basically nill.

When I used spermicide it was horribly irritating and it burned and I got what Lewellyn described- something like a yeast infection. I hated it. I just go it alone with the pill.

Hi there,

I use the vcf film as a backup to my pill (Lutera). I love it. I haven't experienced any burning or anything from it.

The only bummer is that you have to insert it a minimum of 15 minutes beforehand so that it has sufficient time to dissolve, so it's not the most spontaneous thing in the world...but aside from that, I think it's great. It has no smell, it's not messy; you can't even tell it's there. And the little bit of extra protection it provides really helps me keep my mind at ease!
