With perfect use, pills are about 98-99% effective. Typical use lowers that to 95-97%. A second method is always safe.

so, if I use a spermacide which is about 70-75% effective correct? then I should be ok? I really would hate to have to make him go back to using condoms...but I do not want to get pregnant...

You'd be okay with just the pills, but the spermicide is an added bonus. I am on the pills, and the pills are MORE effective than condoms, and I've never gotten pregnant on either.

I personally feel comfortable on the pill and no extra form of b/c. I don't want children yet, however, if I did get pregnant my life wouldn't be over. If you feel you need another form, there are lots of options, not just spermicide (which you may find is irritating to your vagina, I did) but also a diaphragm or cervical cap. Of course you can choose whatever you want.

A cervical cap is only fitted by a doctor, like contacts or glasses. It does not stay in all the time. You put it in before sex, and then leave it in for 6 hours afterwards before removing it.

I sure understand how you feel. Women have different comfort level. Some girls are already comfortable on taking just pills but some needed more protection to reach that comfort level. Are you a teen. I guess you might be too young for me to propose the IUD. If you need more info just p.m. and I will answer right away.

However, I would suggest that you might want to look and consider Implanon. It is an implanted rod and it last for 3 years. You don't have to remember anything for those 3 years. It is hormonal and it is highly effective. It is more effective than the pill and is said to be slightly more effective than tubal ligation! (correct me if I'm wrong).

According to the article I've read, nobody got pregnant during the clinical trial of the Implanon so that means during the trial the actual statistics is 100% effective, but since a company can't claim that something is 100% effective and we always know that nothing fool proof. It was said that it is 99.99% effective.

I mean, if you think about it, insertion pays for the implant itself, the cost of the local anesthesia, and the cost of the doc working for the (on average) 1 minute 30 seconds it takes to insert the thing, lmao.

Unlike an IUD, which has a higher risk of infection and takes (I'd imagine) a lot more skill to insert without perforating the uterus, norplant just goes in much like animal tracking devices. Just stick the needle into the arm, and place in the implant as the needle is withdrawn... I mean I could do that to myself. lol.

Yeah i agree that IUD requires more training. I don't quite get that the implanon is not available yet in my local clincs even though it's been approved for more than a year. I know a lot of places in the U.S. where the contraceptive is being offered already. This was actually my first choice before I found out about IUD.

I wanna know what happens as well...this is an interesting thing you guys are talking about..i haven't heard anything about it before you mentioned it....are there any side affects? and..i'm 20 btw, but still extremely worried about getting pregnant so i'm looking to be as protected as possible without having to go back to condoms

Well, unfortunately the clinic I went to doesn't do implanon yet. However, I did get a prescription for depo. Yes, I've heard horror stories. However, I have had NO adverse reaction to birth control pills, so I think I have a great chance of doing fine on depo ^^
