In Need of a Chin Implant...please Help Posted: 07-19-07 16:39pm
hi everyone..i don't want to spend a lot
of time writing my personal history so
heres the main story to the point:
-i had braces and wore head gear when i
was 14
-i am currently 22
-my jaw/chin structure began to deform
about 4 years ago and i think its getting
worse
-my chin looks like its receding and it
causes discomfort, chewing food and speech
problems
-was at a dentist not long ago and they
discovered my wisdom teeth are peaking
through and need to be removed (will be
this year)
-i live in toronto and need a quality tmj
specialist
does anyone here know how long the whole
procedure takes. what i mean is, the first
consultation with a tmj specialist, the
appointments and finally undergoing
surgery. i know a lot of ppl sometimes
feel they need to have something done when
they don't...many ppl just want to look
perfect ect...but with me this is serious
and i am positive i need to have something
done. also if i'm going to have surgery
done on my chin, should it be done before
or after wisdom teeth removal?
any response no matter how short would be
highly appreciated
thanks in advance

actually, I just received an email from
some random tmj specialist who said they
don't do chin augmentations
so what is the name of the doctor who
specializes in this field and anyone know
of any in Toronto?

Wow Thomas, you are in an area that I am
very uncertain of. By that, I mean, I
also have a recessed chin and have thought
at times it would be nice to have a chin
implant, but the fear of what might happen
to my TMJ, face, pain, etc., has stopped
me. I haven't even done any research to
find out if someone with TMJ should have
chin implants. For some reason, it just
doesn't sound good to do together, but as
I said, I've not researched this area.
There is another thing you should think
about and this is something that I wished
had been practicing when my TMJ first
flared up in my 20's - Functional Joint
Orthotics or Gelb 24/7. I can't really
tell you details except that they attempt
to move the lower jaw forward with use of
special kinds of bite splints. That is a
phase I. There usually are two more
phases after your jaw is stabilized. You
might want to look into this specialty
also.
I'm sorry I can't say much else about chin
implants. Make sure that the oral surgeon
who removes your wisdom teeth knows that
you have TMJ and to NOT keep your mouth
open too wide for too long. If the OS
acts like TMJ is no big deal, you might
want to seek another one.
Take care and please let us know how you
are doing.
God bless...

Hey Posted: 07-20-07 12:22pm
i was going to say that having your wisdom
teeth out first may be a good idea. that
way when you go to have surgery----they
can fix anything that happens secondary to
having the teeth pulled.
Im working on this for you and ill let you
know what i find out as soon as i can. I
wont be on this afternoon or tomorrow(im
working) but I should have something for
you soon. Keep your chin up.

Re: Hey Posted: 07-20-07 16:30pm
wow there seems to be some very nice and
devoted people in these forums thank you
all for your concerns. catswold, I have
thought about all the risks that come with
the surgery and since it is a "fairly quck
and easy procedure", i am willing to do
whatever it takes since this chin/jaw
thing is influencing the way i speak, look
and chew. i'm having my wisdom teeth
removed in september but i'm going to
arrange a consultation this week. (is this
a good idea??? i'm mostly likely going
to have my WT pulled before dyan, it does
sound like the wisest move on my part to
do that.
the i guess you can say "strange " thing
about this problem, is that it causes me
to eat a lot. my parents think i am
obsessed with food but really i am not,
especially since i eat very slowly. when i
am skinny, my adams apple sticks out a
lot, my face looks small and my chin even
smaller. then on days when i don't look so
skinny, my face and neck all look in
porportion to each other and my chin
really doesn't look so bad. i literally go
from an unattractive person to a "very
good looking young man" which i have heard
from many ppl. only reason i am saying
this is because this is the effect food
has on my chin and facial structure as a
whole. basically, skinny me = small, round
face. not so skinny me = long, better
defined face.
I'm telling you guys the difference is
like night and day and somehow no one in
my family believes it but i guess it just
doesn't concern them and they dont' pay
attention to it. this exact thing i just
described i doubt i would even bother
telling the doctor because it sounds a
little foolish and he/she would probably
take it as some incoherent drivel. i would
plan a list of things to ask for anyway
for my first consultation
anyway, i appreciate all the input you
guys give me no matter how big or small.
thanks again and have a great weekend to
you all

haveing a consult cant hurt---just dont
let them do anything that you dont want to
do--take the time to think about it.

Re: Hey Posted: 07-23-07 15:07pm
i've read so many stories about ppl not
being satisfied with the work done on
their face ie: too small of a implant..so
i'm really going to think about this hard.
i can't imagine how mad and frustrated i'd
be if i wasn't happy with the original
results. the average person does not even
know about mentology (i think thats what
its called) so i can't be asking people in
my life to recommend a good surgeon.
whereever i have my first consultation i
guess i'm going to take my chances with
that doctor. i will listen to my instincts
and hope its a very good and experienced
doctor
