Hi, I'm Schae/18. I started Ortho-Tri Cylen Lo back in February due to irregular periods. I never missed any pills until April 29th&30th due to a school trip but I took the required double dosage. Due to that I had abnormal bleeding in May that only gave me a 2 day period. In June, my period was 4 days late(due June 3rd) but didn't come until June 7th and ended June 8th, again only 2 days. I decided instead of restarting my pack on June 10th, I'd just give the pills a break. I went to my actual doctor(not gyno) on June 27th and had urine and blood pregnancy tests and an ultrasound. The tests were negative but found I had Trichomonas-a sexually transmitted infection that goes away with 4 pills in a week, a bladder infection, and the ultrasound showed a had a Functional Ovarian Cyst. I took the STI medication and for a week took the bladder infection antibotics. On July 1st I restarted birth control when my period was due. I still haven't gotten my period but last Saturday I started discharging a brownish/whitish color up until yesterday. I thought it stopped but right around 9pm, I spotted red which I thought was my period. About 3hrs later, it was nothing but the small brownish discharge again.

--Whats going on?? When I first started my birth control, I had breakthrough bleeding when my period actually started for 3wks, nothing like this.--

There are lots of things at play here.

First of all, starting and stopping any birth control can cause spotting and weird bleeding.

Second, some types of b/c just make your period really light or go away all together. There is nothing wrong with this.

Third, these other conditions you have (the cyst and sti) may have effects as well. I'm not sure.

When you are starting to have weird spotting and stuff, in general you should just keep taking your pill and stick it out. Giving your body a rest from the pill won't make you more regular, it will mess you up more. You might have to deal with the weird bleeding for a couple months from when you restart, even if that never happened the first time you started. When you're on any antibiotics, make sure you use a back up method for a while because they make the pill less effective.
