Okay, let's make sure we understand
The reason they recommend you have a baby first, is because they don't want to be sued because you LOST YOUR UTERUS to infection or an unwanted pregnancy!!!

I have Mirena and I am ANGRY that they did not disclose the most IMPORTANT things about it.

Things I wish I had been told:

-how extremely COMMON it is for people to get pregnant on it (1 in 100... there are millions of women on it, I could very likely become pregnant. Also that 1 in 100 is PER YEAR... that means over 5 years, it's really 5 in 100 women)

- What are your chances for loosing a baby or possibly your uterus if you DO get pregnant (you have a 75% chance of loosing your baby or possibly your uterus maybe even your LIFE due to major complications during your first and second trimester)

-My insurance would pay to put it in, but not to take it out, even if I was having complications that could KILL me, they still wouldn't pay to have it taken out, and the doctor's office won't do it if you don't pay up front. So this could KILL you if you can't afford to have it taken out. Might want to re-think that sofa purchase!

If you are considering Mirena... Think very hard about how you would feel if you did get pregnant... Would you put your life on the line for your baby... If so, you could very well DIE.

If you are pregnant on Mirena, I pray that you and your baby make it through a healthy pregnancy... I also pray that you SUE THE HECK out of the manufacturer for putting these ads in Magazines and on TV that make it seem like a good choice.

have me scared now
I have had a mirena since july of 2004 with no complications (except the inability to lose weight)and no periods at all until recently I started having breast pain . I went to the ob/gyn and they did a breast exam and are now sending me for a mammogram . They never checked for pregnancy. I think I will go buy a home test now before I have any mammogram. i have to say I am 36 and no breast cancer in family .

So, What next?
I got my Mirena in in August of 2008. I'm 18, never been pregnant and I haven't had a period or signs of one since Mid-November. I'm going to get tested but I have no signs of pregnancy as far as normal people are concerned. I had something like a three-week period in November and now I'm empty. Just a little paranoid, young pregnancies run rampant in my family.

ectopic with mirena
I've had the mirena since october of 2005 and all has been great. I had pregnancy symptoms starting two weeks or so ago and took a hpt. It was positive. I've been to OB several time this week and they eventually determined it was an ectopic pregnancy. They gave me a dose of methotrexate yesterday and we'll see. I'm the only case of failure my VERY large practice has seen. I still believe this is quite rare, but we all know nothing is 100%. My advice is that if you have symptoms of pregnancy you check it out just in case. You don't want to wait and have it lead to even greater complications. In my case, it was detected early and so far so good. Good luck to everyone!

The reason why they say that you should have had at least one child is because is you've already had a child your cervix is thinned. So if you get mirena and you haven't had a child, it's more painful the first 1-2 months because your cervix is slowly thinning. I haven't had a child and i have mirena. But Im having problems, and think i might be pregnet. Im going to take a hpt tomorrow, im very nervious. I just don't want anything to be wrong with the baby if I'am pregnet.

worried also
i had my mirena for almost five months now. i had to get my mirena surgically put in because my cervix was curved. Last month i spotted for two days but i also have been experiencing a lot of symptoms. My boyfriend told me that he couldn't feel my strings and he normally does and this was about a month ago. Im going to the dr. tomorrow and im scared out of my mind. could i be pregnant or is it all in my mind?

pregnant while on the mirena?
I had my first son very young at 21, so I got the mirena put in place at my 6 week check up. I thought I wasn't going to get pregnant while I had my Mirena but last month out of not having a period for over a year had irregular bleeding for 2 days. I called my dr. and she said to call her in a month and now I am nauseous, tired, dizzy, My boobs are not sore but in the last 2 months almost grew 1 full cup size and I am having the same exact tail bone pain I had with my son. I have taken a home preg. test but it came up negative( with my son, I took multiple tests that said I wasn't but then turned out I was) so I am worried I may be pregnant or have an ectopic pregancy, I have a dr. appt. tuesday but the suspense is killing me, any advice

dang i didnt think u could get pregnant on this iud...
i just had one put it because i just had a baby 3 months ago and i dont want another one for a while. i always got sick from the birth control pills so i decided to have this IUD put in thinking that i would be able to have sex without condoms (cause i hate condoms) and now im mad because im reading so many people have gotten pregnant. so do u think i should still use a condom or the "pull out" method just in case. because i really dont want another baby anytime soon, im just not ready!

OMG, I'm ready all of this and I just go the mirena put in about 7wks ago and I wasn't told none of these statistics...I got the mirena because it appeared no other BC worked for me. I got pregnant off of BC pills & not to mention they make me ill to wear I can't literally function, I got pregnant twice off of nuvaring, one was a miscarriage, I can't take the shot or use the patch ( broke out from that). Oh lord ladies, I do not want anymore babies. I have a 9, 7 & 2yr old. I wanted to get my tubes tied but unfortunately after I had my second son I was sick and they could'nt do so they placed me on the nuvaring and that made me miscarriage, they put me on it again claiming it was improved which brought me to my 2yr old and because I had a fever after having him they wanted to wait to tie my tubes but the insurance wants to charge me a ridiculous copay to get it done...WOW, now I'm on the mirena and praying I don't get pregnant

I have Mirena and I think I might be pregnant.
I have a 5 month old son and I had the mirena put in on December 24th 2008. I have been feeling weird for the past week or so, kinda spacey, having to pee a lot, nauseaous and I've been bleeding for most of the time I've had the IUD in, give or take a couple of random days that I wasn't bleeding. I bought a pregnancy test today and I'm gonna take it tomorrow morning...I REALLY don't want to be pregnant again.

Iud wasn't in the correct place.
I had the mirena inserted about 3-4 weeks ago. Everything was wonderful until this past week. I felt like I could feel the actually IUD inside me. I thought I was going crazy. I have been having horrible headaches and very sore breasts. The last time I had sore breast was when I was pregnant with my twins. I decided I would go get checked out by my MD. She looked and told me the IUD was in the correct spot and not to worry. I told her I didn't care, I wanted it out. Low and be hold, it wasn't in the correct spot. She told me my body was rejecting it. When I first had the mirena inserted it came flying out and she had to do it all over again. Now I am very worried I am pregnant. If it wasn't in the correct place am I still protected by the IUD?

Thought I was choosing the best birth control...
I had mirena inserted about 6 weeks ago and still haven't gotten my period. My doctor had said that it was effective immediatly and so my husband and I used it as the only form of birth control. The lack of my period has prompted me to start researching and I am astounded at the amount of people getting pregnant on this highly recommended form of birth control. We have an 8 month old son and am not planning for another child for a couple years. I would recommend doing research BEFORE you trust a birth control, or you may be like me...wondering.

Slightly concerned...
I've had the Mirena IUD since July of 2007. Becuase I experienced blood clots in my lungs after using the patch (watch out for the patch, ladies, it KILLS), I can't use any form of BC with high estrogen levels. Now, my husband and I haven't been using anything extra. I've freaked out about being pregnant before, but the past week or so I've experienced a few mornings of mild nausea. My breasts don't hurt and I don't feel particularly moody, but I've been tired and I've been attributing that to a cold.

If the HPT that I'm going to take tomorrow turns out negative (hoping and praying as we aren't prepared for a child), I'm going to find a different form of BC. I've read too many posts all over the net from women who've gotten pregnant with the IUD!

Has anyone else who has not had a child previously gotten pregnant while using the IUD?

Extremely eHealthy
No birth control is 100% effective so there is always a chance of pregnancy if you're having sex. That is common knowledge. The mirena is very effective (over 99% effective).

Zgirl11 - false positives are rare, is it possible you period was implantation bleeding? Having not become pregnant on either of my mirena iud's I can't offer personal advice but the Dr will advise you, if you are pregnant, how to go forward with it.

Never had a baby
I had a nurse midwife do my IUD, and she had no reservations doing it despite the fact that I've never had a baby. The only thing was it HURT! Supposedly if you haven't had a baby your cervix is smaller, so it hurts more to have the IUD put in place. I felt sick for a month at least after I got it, but the doc gave me naproxen which helped tremendously. My period is just spotting, and pretty far between. My friend asked if maybe I was having implantation bleeding from a pregnancy, but it's been almost two years since I got my IUD and no babies yet!

Note to people using the iud
Hi, I used the iud after my first son. I became pregnant three months later with my second son. It was inserted properly and checked regularly. My sons are only 14 months apart. So there for I do NOT trust this form of birth control. I went through a lot of stress of never trusting any form of birth control, until I came upon the nuvaring. I was pregnant free for 4 and a half years. I stopped using it for 3 months and became pregnant. I'm trying for my little girl! I'm 25 years old and thinking about just getting my tubes clamped. I heard its the easiest and cheapest procedure for reversal roughly $2000-$4500. I'm not the only one who got pregnant with the iud. I have a friend also who did. Once my story got around I began to learn a lot of others did too. I know at least 3 friends who had serious problems too with the iud. they had to get surgery to get it removed because it was stuck in there lining and was having internal bleeding. Friends of friends also told me similar stories. If this is suppose to be a miracle birth control, it sure is having its flaws and I live in a small town. I suggest anyone experiencing unusual bleeding, pain, or just even feeling unsure about the iud to get checked out asap! Plus my hubby always complained about his penis getting poked by those strings. Hopes this helps.
