Q: the Baby Shower

remember when i posted about the weird invite to my brother and sister-in-laws shower?

well, it was today and it wasn't like any baby shower i've ever been to.

it was basically a buffet style bbq. there were 3 rows of tables set up in the garage, which was wicked hot and we were all dripping with sweat. 1 row was friends, 1 row was my family members, 1 row was her family members. there was no mingling. my brother sat with us and she went between her family's table and the friends table.

at one point i looked up and realized they were opening the gifts. at other showers i've been to, they announce whose gift they're about to open and then they open it and show it and everyone oohs and aahs. nope, they were just plowing through the gifts.

then her mom yelled to come up if we wanted cake.

it was just weird.

wow that is a strange shower, but then again didn't they say it was the end of her freedom?

Uhh... wow. That doesn't sound very welcoming. That sounds more like "thanks for the stuff, there's food if you want some". Neutral

yeah, it was definitely strange.

they got a ridiculous amount of stuff though. i was jealous.

by the way, in the other thread where i first mentioned this i said i didn't know what to get them. if you recall, they got me a bag of random crap her sister didn't want for her baby and a stack of her nephew's 0-3 month clothes from summer (finn was born in november). well, i guess i was holding a mini grudge because i really didn't want to get them something really special but in the end that's what i did because i love giving gifts.

i got them this frame (the baby's room is butterflies)- http://www.kohls.com/main/subcategory.jsp? FOLDER<>folder_id=92293179&bmUID=1 184552866757&showpage=4 ok, the link doesn't work... follow the link and it's on the bottom left of page 5.

and i put a picture of my brother when he was about a year old in the left side, he's sitting in a rocker and holding a stuffed big bird. i also gave them a stuffed big bird, so when the baby is born or a little older they can put a picture of her with her big bird in the other side of the frame.

that is a truly thoughtful gift. I hope your brother appreciates it.

if they tore thru the gifts how do they know who gave what for the thank you cards? (or am i just that old fashioned)

thanks girls! i thought it was a pretty nice gift too. i also thought i should go with a sentimental gift so it didn't end up in the donation bag or whatever.

assena (steph?), she was ripping everything open and he was writing everything down. at least they got that part right!

wow. every single baby shower i've ever been to, everyone watches the opening of the gifts and the card and gift get passed around the room (if it's small enough) so everyone gets a look at the gift and the card to see who it's from. they even keep part of the wrapping, like the bow, and put it all together and make the mom wear it, lol. it's dumb but they always do that. you would think she would at least go around and introduce everyone to each other. that is the oddest thing of all. i think the gift you gave was really thoughtful and sweet.

I just hosted my best friends baby shower she is going too be having twins any day so far each twin weighs 6 lbs ....but at her baby shower we all sat in the house with a/c thank gawd everyone introduced themselves as part of a game i had and then when it came to gift opening we announced whose gift we were opening and then we passed it around played a few more games and then had lunch and mingled it was a good time ....who's idea was it to have family and friends separated? How did that work out? I think passing the gifts around causes OoOoO's and Awwww's also gives the person writing who brought what down for thank you cards a chance to write everything down lol .

Opening gifts in front of people is what I liked the least about my showers,. and then having to pass the damn things around so everyone can look and touch (like they want to). I wish I could have just done it without an audience.

Sounds like a strange party?
