Complicity, respect, listening, suprise... you name it. it all comes to the same idea: you are together, do not only think about your own needs.
make gifts (even if it's just a note on paper), take her out to new places, etc.

that's very subtle and not identic to all girls. some make eye contact with a smile and looks away when you look ; others prefer to be straightforward and make a concrete compliment ; other others just hang out with you because you are funny/friendly/cute/listening/...
The most difficult part is to not overlap friendship and love.

I think it's complicity again. if you feel great together, laugh, have fun, are friendly etc, it's long term. if you're together just to hold hands and keep saying "yeah whatever, I don't care" without any motivation, it's probably short term. in most cases you can easily see and feel it by yourself if something's going to last long or not.

be funny, but not too much, listen when someone needs to talk. do not interrupt. ask related questions to what the lady says. show yourself active. show yourself as well fit into the group

a lot of documents on the internet (called ebooks) cover such subjects. However, don't confuse the sentense "I want to interest a girl" with "I want to be a ladykiller".
Some of those documents focus more on looks and way of being, without radically changing yourself.
Remember that: be and stay yourself ! or you'll hit yourself against a wall. don't always believe what's written, filter the information you think is useful, but don't blindly follow instructions.

Because we can physically do it (well some or most of us)!! Probably dates back to the prehistoric days where that's exactly what they did...by the hair! At least we just verbally "hit on you"!
