Q: Topamax and migraines
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 22nd, 2009
My neurologist took my off of the topomax immediately when I got the small stone. I had a migraine for 3 straight weeks. I couldn't take the torture anymore and started to take the topomax again and now I am about to see a urologist tomorrow. In the meantime I have seen my primary care physician. She told me take the topomax for now and drink 64 ounces of water. I have still not been able to get back to where I was and still get 3 migraines a week. It took a while for the topomax to work before. Do you think the urologis will allow me to take the topomax? It has been the only med that has worked for me. I had been on Inderal, neurontin (my hair fell out and I gain 10 lbs in 2 weeks) and other drugs that just didn't work. What scares me is that the topomax isn't even working now anyway. I am back at square one with pain in my head everyday. Also, would Valtrex cause headaches? I can't seem to take that either. It gives me a migraine. Thank you.

There are studies that indicate that Topiramate (Topamax) can increase the propensity of calcium phosphate kidney stones. Coordination between the urologist and the neurologist might be needed in order to evaluate the risk-benefit of the long term use of Topiramate.
No study indicates that Valacyclovir (Valtrex) can cause headaches.
