Q: took inactive pills instead of active on Ortho-TriCyclen

I was out with my fiance on Friday night celebrating my promotion and after a few drinks we had a great chat about what out future kids will be like - a golfer, a lawyer, a wise a$$ (just like him!) - kids to be conceived in 2 or 3 yrs, not right now. Well, I woke up on Saturday morning in a state of panic thinking that I had forgotten to take my pill before going to sleep on Friday night. I opened my pill box [Ortho-TriCyclen (28 day)] and was simply horrified!

I had last month's (the leftover inactive pills that I never take) and this month's boxes in a drawer in my nightstand. I meant to throw out last month's pills, but must have thrown them in my nightstand thinking that they were this month's. I always take my pill in bed before going to sleep...often in the dark, but I just turn the dial and take the next pill. I took all of the week 1 active (white) pills. During week 2, when I should have been taking the week 2 active (light blue) pills, I had actually been taking the inactive (green) pills from last month's pack! Throughout week 2, I had HORRIBLE cramps (I never get pre-menstrual cramps) and had a "second period" that was heavy compared to my normal cycle. I'm assuming now that the cramping and bleeding was tied to my going off of the pill accidentally, but am also hoping that the bleeding could be tied to something positive (other than a positive pregnancy test!).

I looked at an online ovulation calendar and unfortunately, I don't remember the exact date my last period started; however, even if I am 2-3 days off on my start date, it looks like I had unprotected sex throughout my peak fertility days. Last week would have been a great week to have had a week-long headache... but we had sex every night.

As I continue to type, I think that I know the answer to my question, but barring any fertility problems on either my or my fiance's part, what are the odds that I am NOT pregnant at this point? Slim to none? I didn't resume taking the week 2 pills, as I have missed 8 at this point and the directions only provide guidance on what to do if you miss 2 or 3. I don't want to throw my body into a state of shock by triple-dosing to catch up and I don't want to do anything that might harm the baby in case I am pregnant. I know it's too early to test and I know that not everyone has early pregnancy symptoms, so I'm in the "wait and see and hope for the best" stage.

I would venture to say that there aren't many people out there who are going to respond with a response like "I had the same thing happen to me and I didn't get pregnant", so I guess the more pertinent questions to ask are:
* For those of you who have been pregnant or currently are pregnant, what are some of the very early symptoms other than nausea and breast tenderness?
* My cramping and bleeding occurred while I was ovulating, so I'm assuming that it wasn't tied to implantation, but could it be?
* Do home pregnancy tests ever have positive readings earlier (I will have to wait 3 wks to test if I wait until I am 5 days late)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say slim to none chance you are pregnant since I think you said you've had periods since you messed up with the pill. I know I could be wrong too, but its my opinion.

Cramping and bleeding can happen during ovulation, but you can also have that during implantation. Some pregnancy tests (like first response) can get a positive reading up to 5 days before your missed period. Just make sure you follow the directions.

Maybe you should post in the birth control forum and you might find more answers in there too. I hope you find them Smile

I hope you're right...
I had bleeding about 2 wks after my period and am due again this week for my "real" period. I haven't had my period since my pill blunder. I hope that you are right, though.

I took a test on Friday night (which was probably a few days too early) and it came back negative. I will try again in a few days if I don't get my period.
