Hi, I have a had rash for a couple of months now on my tongue. It starts to heal but starts right back up and never completely heals. I had a tongue biopsy and they found "benign squamous mucosa with mild acanthosis and parakeratosis". What is this exactly I could not get a direct answer out of my doctor. Thank you for your time.

Acanthosis is an abnormal but benign thickening of the prickle-cell layer of the skin or mucosa.
Parakeratosis is a persistence of the nuclei of keratinocytes as they rise into the horny layer of the skin; it occurs normally in the epithelium of the true mucous membrane of the mouth and vagina. When it occurs on the external skin it constitutes a lesion.
Most important thing in your case was to exclude cancer and exactly that was done. Sometimes direct and precise answers about some diagnose can't be given because it is not so easy to diagnose the problem.
