Q: Toilet training boys
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 2nd, 2009
I'm the father of a 3.5 year old son who is potty trained excpet that he occaisionally wets himself. He seems to forget to go to the bathroom until it is too late. How do I get him to remember to use the potty more often? Also, how do I teach him to pee standing up? I want him to stand before he goes to preschool.

A child usually needs to urinate approximately one hour after drinking a large quantity of liquids. You might note by his facial expression that he needs to urinate; at that point, it may be good to encourage him to do it.

As for urinating while standing, the following suggestion might be given. Children at that particular age usually learn new things by imitation. If your son is already aware of the existence of two sexes (male and female), you might want to explain to him the way the boys urinate. Being naked in front of your son might be unpleasant for you; however, your boy might be able to understand you better than with verbal direction while clothed.

Try to be patient and persistent as always when dealing with children.
