Q: Toe nails that keep going yellow and then falling off...

I bruised my toe nails 10 years ago. They went black. They stayed black/purple for 2 months so I dug out all the purple stuff. Nails were left yellow and fungus looking. The nails eventually fell off when a new root came through several months later. The new nail looked healthy at first but then when it neared completion it went yellow near the tip. The yellow then slowly spread down towards the root. The nails fell off.

Over the last 10 years my toe nails have grown back, gone yellow and then fallen off (sometimes with a bit of help) maybe 3 times. I've had the test for fungal infection which was negative. My GP has no suggestions and says it is common... but I'm not convinced.

thick yellow toenails could be gout related
I have read that injury can cause the nails to be permanently thick and yellow, and fall off. Your doc is probably right, there might not be anything you can do.

However, just in case this rings a bell with you, this is my story:

I had yellow nails for years, tried every antifungal remedy and nothing helped, except using an exfoliating foot cream on my feet. Then over the last two years one becamse thick and crusty. When I discovered I had gout in one knee, I changed my diet for much less meat, powdered cherry supplements, etc. to reduce gout, and after two months I noticed there was a straight line across my toenail where the bottom was completely normal, and the crusty yellow was growing out. It's almost gone now at nearly 5 months.

Hope that helps you or someone else out there, it may or may not be what you have.
