Hello, I have a 2 year old and he is 36 inches tall and weighs 45lbs. His doctor put him on a diet and wants him to lose 16lbs. I changed everything that she wanted me to change in his diet and when I took him back yesterday for the checkup, she wasn't happy about him losing only 1lb. I got a second opinon and that doctor said that maybe my baby's doctor should start running some tests to see if there is something else going on. What do you guys think?

I personally don't want to vote on this-I will give my advice though. A few questions first though. Before being put on a diet, what was your child eating daily. Seriously, sit down and write down exactly what your child was eating. Sometimes we don't realize what we are feeding our kids. There is a child in the daycare I work at that literally comes in with enough snack cakes and fruit snacks that would be enough for the whole class but they are just for her. She is extremely overweight.
My personal approach would be to feed my child 3 healthy meals a day and then two to three healthy snacks. Lots of lean meat, fresh fruits and veggies. This is really what our children need. I'm not sure but you may want to ask your doctor about 2% milk if it's a serious problem. Also, take your child outside and get him/her to run around and play. Go to the park, take some walks. Try keeping your child as active as possible. All this together should keep your child where they need to be without having to worry. If all this over time does not give results then it might be time for testing.

well, he has been on 1% milk since January and eats fruits and vegetables and we've been on this "diet" for a month. He lost a pound and I don't think that that is bad at all. He is constantly running around, loves to go outside and play, he don't eat half of what I put on his plate for breakfast, lunch or dinner. He WILL NOT eat meat. I think the reason why is because he got his teeth so late, he didn't cut his first tooth until he was almost 11 months old. When I should have been trying him on Stage 3 and table food, he was still on Stage 2. He likes baseball, so my sister gave him a Tee and he has a bat and ball that he plays with. I taught him how to run for the bases. It's really funny to watch. I didn't buy snack cakes or cookies because I would eat them myself, so he didn't get that here at home and he's here 99.9% of the time. I've talked to a couple of doctors and a nutritionist and they told me that "you don't put toddlers on diets and expect them to lose 16lbs. It's hard enough for an adult to lose 16lbs, you can't expect for a 2 year to do it." I guess I agree with them in part, because by the time that he loses 16lbs, he will be taller and then will be underweight. I also agree that his blood pressure being high is a concern and that's why I think that maybe he should have a 2nd opinion or go to a specialist. I guess I wanted opinions from other mothers to see if I was just not wanting to hear the truth or do I need to listen to my motherly instincts and take him for a 2nd opinion. I guess I am stressing out over this because I dont' want my baby to be sick.

If he's been doing the "diet" this long and not really eating junky fatty food, I would definitely say go se some type of specialist. That is kind of odd that he weighs that much when he's not even eating junk food. I hope you get some answers. Please update us when you find something out.

You have a big boy there...my confusion is, did they check his growth curve on a growth chart before starting his diet? My son is also a little hefty. He has remained since birth at the 75th percentile for weight and 80th percentile for height. It all depends on an individual. I was told by my doctor that as long as he remains in his normal weight curve, all was well. My daughter is just the opposite, petite little thing. 25th percentile for weight 30th percentile for height. She is also considered normal and not classified as underweight by any means. I'm tiny myself, 5'1 and 110 lbs. DH is 5'11 and 200lbs so genetics play a role as well. Some little ones are just meant to grow big.
