Q: Tobacco is safer than Marijuana

This is according to Massachusetts DA's:

Opponents of Massachusetts' marijuana decriminalization ballot initiative just can't stop lying.

Here are some the lies they're flooding the media with, in a cynical attempt to scare voters into defeating the measure on November 4:

Marijuana is more dangerous than alcohol or tobacco — because tobacco takes a long time to kill you and alcohol has health benefits. (Yes, you read that right.) That's according to Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter.
And here are four gems from the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association:

“By empowering drug dealers with decriminalization of marijuana, we would be empowering them to continue their violent ways: carrying and brandishing weapons; ripping off kids who get in over their heads; engaging in bloody turf wars; and indiscriminately assaulting or murdering when things don't go the way they want.”
“Marijuana arrests are strongly associated with violent crime — dangerous criminals who make the wrong choice time and time again.” (In reality, research shows unmistakably that marijuana — unlike alcohol — is almost never the cause of aggression or violence.)
“Very few arrests involving marijuana charges are for simple possession.” (In reality, according to FBI statistics, a full 89% of marijuana arrests are for simple possession.)
The initiative “will allow drug dealers to operate with impunity and make it easier for them to do business with your children.”
You and I know this is outrageous. Don't sit by and let law enforcement officials get away with this blatant lying and fear-mongering — help the campaign fund an aggressive response.

This is the first time in history that an initiative to decriminalize marijuana will be on any statewide ballot, and the campaign needs our help to fight back hard in the little time that remains.

Your thoughts?

Extremely eHealthy
I would see legalization as a more positive outcome, it doesnt kill directly and knowing that anyone can grow, well then, gangs loose their money and have to find another source right?

I would rather see a government grow and sell Marijuana that way we can be definite that it is not chemically altered.

I think it would solve turf wars because then anyone can grow, why buy when you can grow?

I dont know..

A black market for any good creates organized crime. Just look at the Prohibition, Al Capone and the mafia in the 1930's. Legalization and regulation brings with it public safety.

Smoking marijuana
Also marijuana is only physically damaging when smoked, and does not cause harm to the same extent as cigarettes. It can also be eaten or drunken as a herbal tea, therefore none of the health risks associated with smoking apply to marijuana.

I just lost a very close relative to emphysema. The suffering and pain he went through were unbearable to watch. I cannot be convinced that MJ is any worse than tobacco.

Tobacco contains nicotine which makes it HIGHLY addictive. MJ is more potent than tobacco. As a result MJ is less likely to result in cancer, because Mj users don't have to smoke as much to get a "fix". It also poses no physical health risks if chewed, ingested or taken as a tea.

and people who use tobacco use it all day every day without fail....MJ is not that way.People who use MJ do not use it from the minute they wake up until the minute they go to bed, they use it once or twice a day if that much. I am speaking in general here...and I have a smokeless inhaler that I use a lot as well as cooking it in brownies and cookies and also vaporization.

I usually have some at night before bed.If I cant eat I will have some for appetite. My doctor said she would prescribe it for me if she could. She has written me proscriptions for Marinol but it isn't the same.It doesn't suppress the nausea or help me sleep like the real herb does..

There's a positive story about how MJ has helped a person in need! I'm glad that you feel much better!

Ah yeah of course it gives you the munchies as well doesn't it? I can't eat a lot at the moment, I was suffering from a lot of stress, and when I'm stressed I loose my appetite completely. I'm feeling a lot better now though although I've lost half a stone in three weeks... :S

People like yourself really do benefit from using marijuana. It's a shame that people are too busy labelling it a dangerous drug and messing around with its legal status to sit down and look at it's medical benefits.

I was suffering stress due to a very close relative being severely ill (he died recently, but he's at peace at last), and when I become very stressed I have a tendency to stop eating because I don't feel like it. This can go on for weeks.
I have also recently been diagnosed (again) with iron deficiency anaemia, which means I get nauseaus at times (again linking in to not eating) and I also get headaches and faint sometimes because of it. My friend is concerned because she hasn't seen me eat a proper meal in weeks - she thinks I'm annorexic!

I don't smoke MJ, but I strongly support it's use in medicine.

I see..well, it might help with the not being able to eat problem but then again i am not promoting it...I think its a personal choice.
I hope you can get your eating on track and I am sorry to hear about your relatives passing...they R N a better place i think!
Do U take vitamins or supplements? That might help when you cant or don't eat.

Tobacco has no good uses. MJ does. Alcohol (specifically red wine) can have some medical benefits but no one is condoning consuming it like a cockroach consumes crumbs. I think that MJ should be legalized, if not for its medical benefits, then to at least end the violence associated with it. I do not use MJ but I have a friend who was prescribed it for back pain associated with a car accident (T4-T7 were crushed, compressed and dislocated due to...you guessed it, a drunk driver crashing into her vehicle). She is lucky to be walking but the pain at times can be unbearable and she would rather not take oxycodone or any other CNS depressors as they make her extremely tired and nauseated. And she has a small child. So she uses MJ and tylenol. I say its better than "prescribed heroin" lol. It does help a bit with the pain as it relaxes her. It also helps with her appetite which has diminished a bit since her accident, PTSD can dump a load of crap in your lap, loss of appetite being one of the symptoms. I understand fully where she is coming from as far as morphine or any of the other opium derived medicines. I, too would rather smoke MJ than use those drugs. Granted they have benefits, however, me being TINY, the only benefit I recieved from those meds after a c-section was a LOOOONG nap and puking my brains out...and that was using a very low dose. I think if the nurse had handed me a joint...well I think I would have been smiling and "zoned happy" rather than ZZZZ dryheaves barf lol.

Laughing and it would have made the nausea disappear as well!! It really keeps me from throwing up everything I eat and helps with lots of the side effects my meds cause.
