it takes me 3 to 4 hours to clear my bowels and has done for years. I need to go about 8 times before my bowels empty. It is as if a red light comes on and movement stops so I get up and do things until the lights go green again and I hsve to sit back down on the loo. This process is repeated until my bowels are cleared but usually I have to use an irrigation system to clear the last bits of faeces out. Any suggestions?

Hello and thank you for posting your health query on E health Forum.

Based on the history, it seems that your bowel movements are disorganized and probably a weakness of the recto-anal musculature or due to bowel dysautonomy, where in there is abnormal peristalysis in the colon and the rectum.

Tests like Ano-rectal manometry, will be helpful to measure pressures of the anal sphincter muscles. It also measures how well a person feels different sensations of fullness in the rectum.

Also, Sphincterography and anal manometry show how strong the sphincter muscles are and if they relax as they should during rectal emptying.

Weak muscles that still tighten some can be strengthened with special exercise and treatments. Muscles that do not relax with a push can also be retrained. This is called Pelvic Muscle Retraining.

You might consider consulting a physician or a gastroenterologist for the need of the above tests and initiation of the specific therapy.

I hope this helps.
