Q: TMJ with no pain

I have TMJ but it doesn't hurt me. My jaw just clicks when I chew. Should I have work done or will I be ok to live with it if I am not in pain?

Hi KattyKimK,

I suggest that if you are not in pain, then just leave it be.

TMJ with no pain
No! Address it now! I had TMJ with no pain for 14 years and was repeatedly advised to leave be. In that time there was serious joint deterioration I didn't know about, and now it is much, much harder to address. You should at least do a scan to check for dejeneration.

My joints are also deteriorating. However, my doctors don't want to touch it until they absolutely have to. This being when it gets really bad and I can't live with it anymore. I've learnt over the years that it's best to treat the pain, not necessarily the jaw. Hence the reason I would leave it be if there was no pain.

An MRI would be the best way to see what's going on in there, just be wary of what treatments are recommended and always try conservative, reversible and non-invasive treatments first.

Good luck and I hope you remain pain free.

Melanie.
