Q: TMJ Sucess Stories ?

Hi All! I've had tmj for over 3 years. I've been through an NTI, a couple of splints, PT, MT, chriopractic adjustments, etc. I've finally decided to just fork over the cash and nip this thing in the bud, which probably means a really good splint or orthodic and then braces. I was wondering if anyone had any success stories (or knew of anyone who did) with this phase1/phase2 type approach. My pain is not debilitating like some, but it definitely has lowered my quality of life over the past several years. I haven't been to the gym in several months b/c my shoulders and arms are so fatigued. And don't even get me started on my neck cracking.

Anyway, the first consult I got was around 5k and then braces by a LVI dentist. He seems really nice but it's expensive. Especially since this doesn't include braces. I'm also going to try and look at some other specialists in Atlanta (people who mainly/only treat tmj). Any advice or experience relation is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks - Rob

Rob, I was on the same track that you were on, headed towards a lifetime of pain and possible surgery, and then I started trying various therapists. Most of them tried combinations of splinting, massage, electrical stim, etc. Finally I found a guy who had been very well-trained, and he created a daytime splint and a nighttime splint, and those did the trick. Now I'm completely pain-free.

It took a few months to get this point, but it was worth the effort. Now I don't even have to wear anything during the day, but still wear the nighttime splint to prevent nighttime bruxing and further damage to the enamel of my molars, as well as the TMJ's. Don't wait any longer to get some sort of nighttime splint to prevent the damage, otherwise you could end up in surgery, and that's a whole new bag of hurt. Splinting isn't cheap, but it's a lot more expensive to continue causing damage (unintentionally, of course). Make the investments as soon as possible, because the alternatives will be much worse. I do realize that TMJ therapy can be really expensive (mine cost thousands of dollars), but search online for cheaper sources of quality splints.

Best of luck to you!

Sorry, I forgot to mention: An orthodontist tried to convince me to get braces, and I'm glad I resisted and instead did the splinting, because it would've cost me thousands and thousands of dollars, and probably wouldn't have solved the TMD anyway.

Have you seen a chiropractor? Realignment may help, and it's covered my insurance!

I did the braces (thousands of dollars) by an ortho that claimed she was a tmj specialist. It is now much worse than when I started. My jaw wont even click/crack any more. The pain is so severe, it is now stuck at a certain point, and wont even open to its fullest.
My own dentist made a pathetic splint, and it has also done nothing. (I am looking for a new dentist as well, in Ontario) I am currently looking into finding a new treatment I heard of using botox... ? If anyone knows of a good dentist in Vaughan, Ontario, I would love to know!!
