Q: TMJ - feel like toothache ?

I started out having mild pain in one of my top right molars (which I had to have filled 2x last year) a few days ago.(Quick history on this tooth: April of '08 I had a cavity filled...it remained very sensitive to cold up until I had it re-filled (with an insulator) in August or Sept of '08. The sensitivity to cold went away about 10 wks after the second filling.) It quickly developed into a jaw ache with pain going from my TMJ to 3/4 of the way to my chin, sometimes hurting in the filled tooth also. It sometimes feels like an earache is starting, but no other symptoms of that.

I went to the dentist who diagnosed me with TMJ, and suggested warm moist heat, etc etc, and eventually probably a mouth guard (splint?) which would not be ready until a week after I ordered it. He said that it was possible that being pregnant caused a hormone change that affected my jaw/bite and it is possible it will settle down in the future.

Two days later (this morning) I woke up with virtually no pain in my jaw, but if I bite the tiniest bit using the filled tooth it hurts like crazy. If I touch it on either side it causes discomfort and sometimes pain. It feels like a pressure kind of pain.

The molar behind the filled tooth is somewhat sensitive also.

Is this a normal TMD issue or is it likely that I am having an issue with the filling again? It seems like a strange coincidence.

I am 14 wks pregnant, so I have only been doing Tylenol 1x per day, moist heat, sleeping on my back, soft/blended diet, no gum, no caffiene, no chewy foods, lots of rest and practicing my relaxation Smile

Any thoughts/experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Have a good one,
Leah

Hi, Leah.
Has a possible need for root canal on that super sensitive tooth been mentioned? Has it been tested by your dentist or an endodontist?
