tmj disorder

hi there, just need to ask question about tmj. i have a friend
who has a bad bite and i think he really is having a jaw problem.
though he said he dont feel pain, could this still be a tmj disorder?
and if so, could this be treated without surgery? and should he be
consulting a dentist or an ortho?many thanks.
