Q: TMJ and Malocclusion

Hello,

I have TMJ caused by poor orthodontic treatment which moved my jaws improperly. Due to this I also have malocclusion. Every dentist I see wants to fix this by shaving my teeth so that they all touch when I bite. Currently only my wisdom and 2nd molars touch. I am also getting a new splint. Has anyone had their teeth shaved in order to help obtain better occlusion? has it helped?

Pains back and side of neck, shoulders and shoulder blades, top half of back (all chronic). both top and bottom jaw pains, less intense than other pains

Hi there,

I would not recommend having your teeth shaved at the dentist office. I had this done three summers ago, not being told what they were doing and why, and it worsened the condition of my TMD severely. I suggest that you get a referral to a Surgeon who specializes in this area. In the meantime, the bite spit should be fitted well enough to help with the pain, and then see what happens.
