Hi Kimjones and welcome to ehealth: I, for one, believe that aging has much to do with our memory control...My husband like I am older...After he stopped working I found him kind of going into a more relaxed mode...This is fine as long as the brain does not follow...A few months ago he decided to get into the Nooks for reading...There I found that despite the years of being on the computer and being on his own computer, that he was kind of lost...I mean no charge ahead like I am...Slowly I built up his confidence...Talked him into being all that he could be...He not only conquered this, but today he went down and purchased an IPad...This for him is a big accomplishment...I wish I could tell you how many times I have been thanked today for giving him the push forward that he needed...Just a gentle shove here and there and helping him walk this walk in life again...
My husband is not impaired in the slightest, but at 76 years old a new kind of fear sets in...That being the unknown, thus help is needed...Now I am the opposite...My brain grows in leaps and bounds...I can't grasp enough...My or our children tell me constantly how I keep my husband so young and I know it...I believe a man and especially a man must be kept stimulated to the importance of still learning and growing...This I believe may help you in your working with your Grandfather...I work with his memory...Don't let it get lazy....It is all a part of my keeping him young...
Work with him...Praise him when needed and don't let him get down...I may be wrong, but I think many things in life that we accept should not be accepted...But, then I may be talking a talk that the medical profession wouldn't agree with....I believe when we let ourselves grow old that a part of our mind fades...Me, I have only just begun...Take care and good luck....
Caroline
