Q: Tinnitus on birth control

Greetings everyone,

I started taking Yaz 1 week ago today; yesterday I woke up with a buzzing in my left ear that turned into a vibrating hum by evening, sounding like there is a phone off the hook in my head. It's only gotten worse today, so I contacted my physician and she called in a prescription for another type of birth control pills but I've gotten to thinking...

Back in 2005 I had one other experience with tinnitus and it happened around the time I was using the birth control "patch." At the time I didn't see the connection and stopped the patch due to excessive menstrual bleeding (the tinnitus faded away over the period of a couple months), but today I googled "birth control" and "tinnitus" and it seems the two can go hand-in-hand. I'm thinking birth control pills will NOT be an option to manage my long-standing Endometriosis. Has anyone else had a similar experience with tinnitus (ear ringing/roaring/buzzing) on birth control pills in general or Yaz and/or the Patch in particular?

Thanks!

Not especially ... but one thing that has helped me manage tinnitus is cleaning my sinuses. Perhaps there is a connection between ear ringing and BC pills but have you sought help from an ENT specialist?

ENT figured it out
Just an FYI for anyone that comes across this post, I saw an ENT doctor and was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease, a build of up pressure in the inner ear triggered, in my case, by the hormones in the Yaz birth control pills. It can lead to progressive hearing loss and deafness, so if you're getting ringing/roaring/echoing/abnormally sensitive to noise in even just one ear and/or dizziness/vertigo while on birth control pills, stop the pill and get into an ENT. My ear pressure reversed to normal approx. 1 week after stopping Yaz and 1 days before my period came on (as we all know, periods are triggered by a drop in hormone levels). Hopefully yours will, too!

Good for you! I'm so glad that you found a diagnosis...and came back to share it with us! Hormones as a trigger to ear discomfort...who would have known?

I have also learned to manage tinnitus by getting away from electrical appliances and deep breathing in a quiet room. I think meditation helps me tap into the aural senses in a deeper way so that the ringing becomes less bothersome and more part of my human experience.

I've been on Yaz for right at a year now. Everything was great in the beginning...the usual adjusting...ie. yeast problems. However, back in Jan of this year (2009)I started having A LOT of ear problems...eventually developed ringing in the ears and had to have tubes put in. I also started having blood pressure spikes, anxiety/panic attacks, depression/uncontrollable crying, mood swings, migraines, sinus problems, acne.....the list goes on and on. I just thought I was going crazy...went to every specialist known to man kind....nothing wrong. I finally started having female problems again...left and right one after another....decided to google YAZ and looked it up on WebMd. to find another lady on there at the same date range having ALL of the same problems I was....So as of 4 days ago I quit taking YAZ thus far nothings better...but I truly believe with given time it will....GOD BLESS ALL!!!
