Q: Tinnitus and popping of the ear
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 8th, 2008
For the past few months, I have been experiencing "popping" of my left ear when I lay down on a pillow. At first, this "popping" was infrequent and would go away with a quick swallow, but recently, it has been happening anytime I put my head down and has been lasting to some degree all day. The only other ailment I have had in the interim was a brief and minor cold, which lasted 3-4 days. I have had two ear infections (once 2 years ago, the other 15 years ago as a child), but this case doesn't hurt like those did. Any idea what could be causing this chronic popping, and is it serious? Thanks for the help!

According to your symptoms you probably have a kind of tinnitus. There could be several reasons for tinnitus:
1. Barotitis – decreased air pressure in the middle ear (usually conditioned by upper respiratory infections);
2. Foreign bodies inside the outer ear canal;
3. Disorders of the middle ear (infections…);
4. Disorders of the inner ear (Menier disease, otosclerosis…);
5. Side effects from certain drugs;
6. Acoustic neurinoma;
7. Vascular anomalies (pulsating tinnitus) etc.
You need an ENT-examination and a few tests including an audiogram. Depending upon the preliminary test results you may need further tests like an EEG, acoustic evoked potential test, MRI of the brain, etc.

You can consult an ENT specialist about your problem.
