Q: Tightness in throat and chest

I am just getting over a sinus infection, but I also have a lot of stress in my life. Right now what I am experiencing is something like a tightness in my throat that has now extended into my chest. In some ways I feel like I have something lodged in my throat but it will not clear and it makes me sometimes have shortness of breath.

I have been tested for Asthma (I do not have it). I was cured of WPW, so obviously that has nothing to do with it. I do have some sort of Chronic Cough and I'm seeing a specialist in August about that. These recent symptoms have lasted for 3 days (on and off) but only today have they become persistent and extended into my chest.

Dear Chris,

I am going through exactly the same thing. I had a sphenoid sinus infection in September last year. After 3 months on antibiotics, many MRI's and CT's and blood tests, my headaches on the right side, I have had ongoing headaches, more like daily migraines. In the last 5 months I have suffered from throat tightness, chest tightness and pains, shortness of breath, dizziness, many sleepless nights, nausea, numbness in the face, legs, arms and lots more. I have seen 2 ENT specialists, 3 neurologists, a cardiologist, a naturopath, psychologist, physio and 3 different GP's. I have had a cardio echogram,2 ECG's chest x-ray, more blood tests, gastroscopy, and honestly I cannot remember what else. For the last 2 months my GP keeps on telling me that the tightness in the throat, which extends to the chest and then triggers the headaches is caused from anxiety. I don't particularly feel anxious about anything. I was very worried that I had a tumor for many months as it took forever to clear the sinus infection and am generally a person who runs around juggling 100 things at a time but can't come to accepting the tightness in the throat and all the other symptoms that come following are anxiety. Some days I get the tightness all day. Some days it presents itself as if someone is chocking me, sometimes it feels as if I have something stuck in my throat and sometimes a very uncomfortable restriction of some sort. I have been looking for an answer for the last 5 months. IF you come across one please let me know. What type of specialist are you seeing in August? For now I wish you the best of luck. Hang in there you are not alone.

Regards

Gina

Just started experiencing these symtoms a week ago. Endend up in the ER with chest pains and they told me it was a panic attack.
I have the tightness in my throat and chest, dizziness and sometimes headaches.
My doctor prescribed me allergy medicine which only makes me feel worse and has just referred me to a cardio specialist.
At the ER they did a ECG, head cat scan, chest x-ray and blood work and found nothing. Had bloodwork at the doctor's office and found nothing. Sounds like I have a long road ahead of me reading what you've been through so far.

I've had these symptoms--tigtness in throat that extends to chest and stomach, feeling of not being able to breathe because chest is so tight. They've been with me for a couple of years now and I am told by my heart doctor, pcp, and the ER that all my symptoms are stress related. I have MVPS (mital valve prolapse syndrome)and have learned through research that people with MVPS have lots of physical symptoms like these. Over a year ago I suffered from panic attacks but they are now under control. All it took was for me to understand what they were and accept the fact that stress can cause a huge array of physical symptoms that make you think there are all kinds of medical things wrong with you. If you can have faith that they are all stress related and then take steps to reduce and control the stress in your life they do get better and, I'm hopeful, they will all be gone and forgotten some day.
