Q: Thyroid cancer symptoms and treatment
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 16th, 2008
I would like to know if a rash sometimes is involved with thyroid cancer. I have a rash that came on the same time as the testing was done and it has not gone away. It is exactly from one side of my nect to the other righ where the gland is. It is itchy and red. I would also like to know if you think it is possible for a Dr. to just go ahead first and operate without first doing a biopsey. Especially if there are so many leisons.

Most doctors and researchers agree that rash is not one of the symptoms of thyroid cancer. No data was given about what exact testing was done prior to the rash. If an ultrasound of the thyroid gland was done, and considering the fact that the area involves only the skin above the thyroid gland, there is a possibility that you might have expressed an allergy to the ultrasound gel. If this is the reason, topical creams with antihistamines and corticosteroids might be helpful. However, if cancer is suspected anywhere in the body, use of corticosteroids should be taken very carefully, because if taken for a longer period corticosteroids can decrease the power of the immune system, thus helping the tumor growth.

The biopsy prior to the surgery would help the surgeon to better determine the indications for the surgery, as well as get a better picture what to expect and how to plan the operation.
