Thumb Sprain or torn Ligament? Should I see a specailist?

I Jammed/Sprained my thumb 2 weeks ago when a shot was blocked playing BBall. It instantly was swollen and I was unable to move it much. I went to an urgent care and they x-rayed it and said the alignment of the bone was good and that I should just wear a brace for a few weeks.

Now after 2 weeks most of the bruising is gone and I can move it in most directions, however, the strength in my thumb is GREATLY reduced and in certain movements it is still very painful ( for example if I use my thumb to dispense liquid soap). Also range of motion is limited in some directions. (I can't touch the base of my pinky with thumb and the thumb on my injured hand does not extend as far as the other hand.)

I Know that this injury will take a while to heal however I am curious as to the potential of a damaged ligament and at what point should I go see an Orthopedic Dr. ( I would have done so already but As of Jan 1, I have a $10000 deductable) I am not asking for a diagnosis, just some guidance as to whether it warrants a trip to a specialist or if I should give it more time.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Only you can judge how sore it is and if it is healing...I have seen professional football players with thumbs in a cast because of the pain...A lifetime of pain is not fun and on the other hand you wonder if surgery would help....Good luck...

The same thing happened to me during volleyball. Surgery is the only way to go, or it will just get worse. no matter how much time it is spent immobilized, it will still be in pain. I have had this injury for four years now, and am planning to have the surgery soon.
