Q: Thumb injury
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 29th, 2008
I jammed my thumb playing basketball about 6 months ago, it didn't break and I had full movement, but there was pain. The pain has gradually decreased, but even today after 6 months it's still sore when I test the full range of movement.

could I have permanently/severely damaged my thumb, or is it just taking a long time to heal because I keep using my thumb and the daily wear and tear is preventing it from healing fully?

Orthopedics Hip, Knee, and Shoulder Injuries Answer A4222
Current medical status: possible thumb ligament damage

Current medical treatment: tried to limit movement via splint

You probably acquired a bigger thumb injury than you thought. Did you have an X-ray image taken to confirm or exclude a fracture? You may also have extended or even torn off ligaments or the joint capsule. You needed to rest that thumb.

You should consult an orthopedist about this.
