Q: Thrush after IUD coil
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 16th, 2009
Hi,
ive had thrush non stop for 2 years now and its getting me down:(
My doc keeps prescribing me with canestan pessary and each time i went she would just up the dose. This does not work and every time I use a pessary more than once straight after i bleed the very bright almost waterd down blood that is NOT my period. This is getting me down I just cant seem to get rid of it!
I have an IUD coil and the thrush started after this was given. I dont wear tights or tight underwear my underwear is all cotton. I dont have itching or burning symptoms its the strong smelling and thick white discharge i suffer from.

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth's Ask a Doctor forum.

You have thrush non stop for 2 years now ever since you had an IUD placed. Also you had an abnormal bleeding from your vagina that was not the normal periods. There is a chance that IUD is the source of your infection and bleeding. Hence it would be good if you could discuss this with your gynecologist and get this removed. You would then need to follow an alternate contraceptive like a pill.

Once the IUD is removed you would need to get a complete treatment for thrush which would involve both oral medication and local application creams or pessaries taken for 2-3 months. At times both the partners need to be treated. At other times a combination treatment of two or more anti-fungal agents is required.

You can discuss these possibilities with your gynecologist as on net and without examining it is difficult to give a confirmed opinion. Hope this helps. Take care!
