Q: Thrombophlebitis treatment
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 22nd, 2009
I have developed redness, swelling and considerable tenderness (comparable to a burn) over a vein on the anterior aspect of the forearm of my left arm 2 weeks post wisdom tooth extraction surgery under GA. The vein appears to be hardening and this is spreading up my forearm. Could this be thrombophlebitis? If so should I be concerned as there is a family history of blood clots on my fathers side of the family!

Acording to the symptoms you reported, you might be experiencing thrombophlebitis. Thrombophlebitis is a condition in which the particular vein is inflamed due to a blood clot or thrombus. Thrombophlebitis is characterized with pain, redness, and edema in the affected part of the body.

You might want to visit a specialist in hematology for blood coagulation tests and adequate treatment of the inflamed vein.
