Q: Throbbing headaches and symptoms of hypertension
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 11th, 2009
I have a throbbing in my left temple. I'm wondering if its from stress or high blood pressure. It can happen when I stand or sit. Any suggestions on what this is? Its been going on for the last few weeks. I'm worried that it might be a stroke.

According to the symptom you reported (throbbing in left temple), it is possible that you might be experiencing high blood pressure. In most of the cases, no symptoms can be detected in hypertension. The most frequent symptom of a headache is nonspecific as well as the throbbing.

The throbbing might be related to an insufficient blood supply in the area. The insufficient blood supply might be caused by atherosclerotic plaques in the neck arteries.

You might want to visit your family doctor and have your blood pressure measured. Laboratory blood tests might be needed to examine triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood. Anti-hypertension medications might be given. A Doppler examination of the neck arteries might be needed to check about the blood flow.

In the end, the throbbing might be related to stress. Trying different relaxation techniques and visiting a psychotherapist to try to overcome the problems that bother you might be helpful.
