A few statistics (and why I am prochoice)
Ectopic pregnancy occurs at a rate of 19.7 cases per 1,000 pregnancies in North America and is a leading cause of maternal mortality in the first trimester.

What is gestational diabetes?
This is a type of diabetes that some women develop during pregnancy. Between 2 and 7 percent of expectant mothers develop this condition, making it one of the most common health problems of pregnancy.

How often does placenta previa occur, and what are the symptoms?
Placenta previa occurs in about one in 200 pregnancies. Women who've had a placenta previa in a previous pregnancy have a 4 to 8 percent chance of a recurrence. The most common symptom of placenta previa is painless uterine bleeding

Placenta Accreta
One out of 2,500 pregnancies will have this attachment abnormality. Placenta accreta is by far the most common of these problems, accounting for 75 percent of cases. In placenta accreta, the placenta digs deeply into the uterine wall, but does not pierce the uterine muscles. In placenta increta, which accounts for 15 percent of cases, the placenta pierces the uterine muscles.
But a woman does die of pregnancy-related causes every minute somewhere in the world -- more than 536,000 per year.

Nearly 13% of all babies in the U.S. are preemies, a 20% increase since 1990. A 2006 report by the National Academy of Sciences found that the 550,000 preemies born each year in the U.S. run up about $26 billion in annual costs, mostly related to care in NICUs.
Umbilical cord prolapse (UCP) is a rare, obstetrical emergency that occurs when the umbilical cord descends alongside or beyond the fetal presenting part. It is life threatening to the fetus since blood flow through the umbilical vessels is usually compromised from compression of the cord between the fetus and the uterus, cervix, or pelvic inlet. There are two types of UCP:
Overt prolapse, which is the most common, refers to protrusion of the cord in advance of the fetal presenting part, often through the cervical os and into or beyond the vagina. The fetal membranes are invariably ruptured in these cases and the cord is visible or palpable on examination.
Occult prolapse occurs when the cord descends alongside, but not past, the presenting part. It can occur with intact or ruptured membranes. The diagnosis should be considered in the setting of a sudden, prolonged fetal heart rate deceleration. An occult prolapse often cannot be diagnosed with certainty, but is suggested by clinical features (eg, fetal bradycardia) and findings at cesarean delivery.
INCIDENCE — The incidence of UCP ranges from 0.14 to 0.62 percent and has not changed in years [1] . However, perinatal mortality related to UCP, which was as high as 375 per 1000 births in the early 1900s, has fallen to between 36 and 162 per 1000 births within the past few decades [2] . This decline is likely secondary to significant improvements in neonatal intensive care and immediate delivery by cesarean birth once cord prolapse is diagnosed.
Mothers with venereal diseases may wish to terminate their pregnancy as so not to infect the unborn fetus. Higher incidences occur with AIDS patients.
All these statistics, plus the mother's own pre conception health, add up to about ONLY 15% of all pregnancies being UNCOMPLICATED.
