Q: The proper procedure for taking Yaz
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 29th, 2009
OK, I take YAZ birth control. I'm on my first week, and while taking a pill out of the package I dropped it down the sink. Should I go on and take the next days pill for today or skip? Please Help.

Birth Control Answer A7451
Yaz (generic name: Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol) is a birth control pill that is recommended to be taken in the following regimen: take one light pink tablet daily for 24 consecutive days and one white inert tablet daily for the following four days. Afterwards the cycle is repeated.

Given the data you provided (wasted one pill, being on the first week of the birth control pill cycle), you are advised to take one pink (active) tablet to replace the one you wasted. However, you would need one pink tablet more in order to complete the full period when you are supposed to take the active pills. Therefore, you are advised to visit your gynecologist for another prescription.

It would have been rather problematic if the next pill was another color. Not following the recommended regimen might lead to hormonal disturbances which might alter the menstrual period (its frequency-start and its length), as well as the blood flow (quantity or color changes).
