The pill, sickness and pregnancy Posted: 03-26-08 19:36pm
I'm on the pill, I've been on it for quite
some time and it's worked great. However,
I know that sickness can make it less
effective. I got sick last Wed/Thursday
only for about a day, I think it was a 24
hour bug or something, but I had a bit of
sickness and diarrhoea, and I had sex on
Saturday night, without a condom. I didn't
even think about the fact that I'd been
sick, because I felt fine. But when I got
sick, it was during my pill free week,
just before my period came. I know I'm
still protected during this week, but
could the sickness increase chances of
pregnancy even though I wasn't taking any
pills?

the only reason sickness should interfere
with the effectiveness of the pill is if
you throw up shortly after taking it,
before the pill has a chance to get into
your system. Or in the case of severe
illnesses/major surgery where you will be
on bedrest for a prolonged period of time.
You should be fine, especially if you were
on the placebo week because there is no
chance that you could have thrown up the
active pills before the hormones get into
your system.
