I've had a pretty bad head cold for a few days now, and the cough I've had is making my chest hurt. Its painful to take deep breaths. Do you think this is just a cold with a bad cough or something more serious? I've never had chest pain when I've had previous colds with coughs. Also one of my lymph nodes in my neck is swollen if that helps any. I just want to know if I'll ever get better!!!

Hello, and thanks for your medical question on ehealth forum.

It seems that you might be having a viral bronchitis, which might be the cause of your severe cough and chest discomfort.

Bronchitis is a difficult condition to tolerate, as the inflammation in the bronchi, results in severe cough, which can occur in bouts and disturb sleep.

But this condition is self limited and resolves in about 7 -10 days.

Steam inhalation , cough lozenges, and cough suppressants (tussin DM) might be helpful to reduce the cough and the discomfort to some extent.

In case the symptoms are intolerable , consulting a doctor for proper treatment might be helpful.
