Q: Testing for pregnancy and endocrine disorders
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 15th, 2009
Sometimes my periods are still irregular. For the past 4 months, my periods have been coming too early (any where from 24-20 days apart). Last month, my period (which usually lasts 7 days) came on the 6th. It's now the 14th and there's still nothing.
Two weeks ago, I was engaged in sexual activity (but didn't actually have sex). Precum fluid on the guy's boxers came in contact with my (thin) underwear near my opening, but he didn't come and we didn't have sex. I have not engaged in sexual activity other than that since before my last period. However, I'm having some pregnancy-like symptoms. I've been more hungry, my nipples seem a little strange, I'm bloated, I have nausea, and I've been a little emotional. I have no breast tenderness, no increased bathroom usage, and no pink or brown splotches of blood on my underwear. I'm planning on taking a pregnancy test. Could these just be symptoms of PMS? Or could I really be pregnant?

Could these just be symptoms of PMS or could you really be pregnant?

It seems that the symptoms you described of having your periods "too early" might indicate a change in your endocrine system. A missed or late period requires a urine pregnancy test that you can buy from any drugstore. If the urine test is negative, you can request a blood test from your healthcare provider to confirm the accuracy of the urine pregnancy test. A sperm cell can live for up to 96-hours in the vagina, therefore, the possibility of pregnancy should be considered.

If your pregnancy test is negative, then an appointment with your gynecologist would be helpful to look at other possible conditions such as a thyroid or hormone imbalance disorder.

Thanks for asking the question.
