Q: Tension in back of head
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 6th, 2009
Tension in the back of my head on the lower right:

I am not sure what this means but I've had this situation for years, it seems to be brought on by the stress of reading, initially i don't feel anything, but once i am about an hr into reading, it starts, almost like some signal to stop reading, weird, doesn't hurt at all, just an uncomfortable tension that distracts me. Its like that part of my head comes alive and i could feel the tension. i am not able to focus when it starts.

I am a reader too and I have to be careful about where I read. For example, sitting reading in bed can be a disaster for my back; reading in poor light is not helpful; lying down and reading places strain on one's eyes.

The first thought is this - do you need glasses? A new prescription? This is the first cause of strain and tension in my experience.

My second thought relates to ergonomics. I notice my wife sitting in a complex position and she gets neck and back strain. Why not document your sitting positions etc when you next read so that you can find out what the physical correlates are of the strain and tension?

Best wishes
