Q: Tension headaches

I have been having tension headaches now for over a year and I have seen doctors, specialists had a mri scan but there is nothing that they can find. I have been on amitriplyne and loads of other antidepressants but they have only made my head worse. I have had botox, acupuncuture but the pressure is there 24 hours a day and nothing I do helps. I bought a treadmill and have been exercising alot more but again these headaches dont go away. I need to know is there a possibility that wearing clip in hair extensions could be causing this tension? Someone mentioned it to me as I wear 3 clips on either side of my head to give my hair some thickness not lenght and have been wearing them nearly every day for 2 years. I am so embarrassed to ask my doctor if this could be the problem after everything that I have went through. Please let me know if this has happened to you

It's possible. I know certain barrettes or hair clips can cause me headaches if I wear them for too long. Why don't you conduct your own experiment? Go without the clips and extensions for a couple of days and see how you feel.

Heavy Clips?
If the clips are too heavy, in my opinion, that can cause some sort of irritation. I am not a girl/woman, so it's difficult for me to tell how it feels when one wears clips. However, if I put something on my head (even it is very light) I do feel very irritated. That is the reason why I am trying to help you out. If indeed the headache is being caused by clips, then you can either wear lighter clips or stop wearing them at all (which obviously you are doing now). Another solution could be (assuming the headache is being caused by the clips) try thinking something else instead of thinking the clips are bothering you. Divert your mind into other thoughts. I say so because the clips actually have no ability to cause you any physical pain. It's all about what is going on in your mind. If you feel embarrassed to talk to your doctor about this, I still don't think it's a problem since you can conduct an experiment by yourself by opening the clips for some days (as said by one of the respondents). Was your MRI scan taken for your brain? Sometimes a sinus headache is unnecessarily confused with a tension headache or something more serious (like a neurological disorder). So, in my opinion, it wouldn't be too bad an idea to take a CT scan image of your Para Nasal Sinuses (PNS) to rule out the possibilities of a sinus infection. By the way, you don't need a Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) scan for sinuses. A CT scan is good enough to catch the detailed images of all your sinuses (maxillary/ethmoid/frontal/sphenoid). I am talking so much about sinusitis because my ENT doctor told me there are simply too many people who confuse a sinus headache with something such as a tension headache, depression, or a neurological disorder. They visit a psychiatrist or a neurologist and unfortunately end up taking the wrong medications. So please be careful about this and try obtaining a CT scan image of your sinuses. Hope that helps. God Bless you!

Thanks for taking the time to get back to me.. I have seen an ear nose and throat specialist and he has ruled that out. I have another appointment next week with a specialist at a head pain clinic so I will see what they say.. I have had my extensions out for a few days but no difference. Maybe it is just my lifestyle.. 2 kids, job , busy all the time but I really don't feel that I am stressed but will see what he says next week. THis is the first time I have ever used one of these sites so I appreciate you taking the time to repond to me so thank you so much xxxx

You are welcome!
So here is what you are saying: 1) MRI scan shows no neurological abnormalities. 2) ENT doctor has ruled out any sinus infection. Looks like it's really a tension headache. If you can take it from a positive perspective it’s not too bad a thing (although a headache is never a great experience and I know how awful it was before I went for sinus surgery) because at least you will never require a surgery for a tension headache! I agree with you in that it has something to do with your life style. May be you are always being too worried over the things going in life. Well, I am not a doctor and I am not sure if my opinion is going to help you but I take a very simple approach to life. I am always honest to people and I try to work with the best of my ability when I am trying to achieve something in my life. To me it’s more important that I have honestly tried to achieve what I want to achieve irrespective of whether I have actually achieved it or not. I try not to worry about whether I will actually be able to achieve my goals but to me it’s more important that I am strongly committed and determined to my goals and accept from there on whatever happens. That is how life goes. Some people are lucky enough to gain more often than not what they want to gain whereas some are not so lucky. You have to accept what life gives you having made sure you have given the maximum effort. So that is how it works for me. Having said these, it is always much easier said than done and I myself often struggle to keep up with what I have told you here and you have the absolute freedom to disagree with me. Moreover, a doctor's opinion is always better because he is an expert in that field and he knows better than me how the human body and mind function. However, sometimes you don't necessarily have to be a doctor to understand yourself. If you analyze your thoughts you will discover a lot about yourself. The doctor knows how your body and mind are functioning from a medical point of view but you know better than him how exactly you are feeling when you are suffering from a disease. Finally, at this point, if you are wondering why I am taking so much interest to help you, well, that's my nature. I like helping people with my limited knowledge as much as I can irrespective of whether he/she is an American/Nigerian, Black/White, Christian/Muslim/Jew, Rich/Poor. I simply love to help people. You are welcome here at ehealthforum! God bless you!

Thanks I will take on board everything that you said and do a appreciate the time you have taken to reply. It is chronic tension headaches but how they started I have no idea and I just need to find some sort of medication to help me without getting all the side effects that go with them. I hope my visit next week to see the doctor gives me some hope. I am going on holiday with my family beginning of June so I really hope I feel better then as having a headache everyday really does affect your quality of life. I will keep you posted after my visit and thanks again x
