Q: Tender abdomen after medical abortion

I went through a medical abortion starting Friday, Aug 28 (took first pill at Planned parenthood) Aug 29th, took second pills (Buccal/In cheeks) I was 5 weeks 6 days when i started the whole process. I passed 4 clots, size of (Dollar coins) then after that just bleeding and a little tissue here and there.

Aug 30th, was feeling better but began bloating in lower abdominal area. And was tender in the area with mild cramping like menstrual cramps. I couldn't stand for very long with out the soreness starting to cramp up and hurt.

Aug 31st -- Now I feel MUCH better, no more abdominal cramps really. I am still passing blood (not very heavy) though but a good amount, definitely not light..also passing tissue here and there. And now I have lower bloated feeling. Very tight tender abdominal.. With a "bubbling" feeling every once in a while, kind of like gas. The lower abdominal area is still tender also.

No fever, no foul smelling discharge, no nausea (though i am taking anti nausea pills when i take the anti biotic), no real fatigue anymore, starting to feel quite normal (energy wise) again. I guess the ONLY issue i am having now is the lower abdominal "full" feeling, tightness and tenderness.
Anyone else have these post medical abortion symptoms?

Hi Kayla,

I actually just had the same experience as you. Took my first pill at Planned Parenthood this past Friday (was about 6 weeks pregnant), took the misoprostol buccally on Saturday, had the most severe cramps of my life, especially for the first half hour after taking the misoprostol. My lower abdomen is pretty bloated and tender as well. I think this is normal. Hopefully it goes down within a few days. I didn't have a fever either, but am still having mild cramps and a good amount of bleeding as you are experiencing. Please keep updated, this bloated feeling is killing me!

Hi Hurtz22! Happy to hear from you Smile My bloating is now coming and going. I think it IS "gas" because once I "release" I feel 100% better, lol. The thing is, it gets so bloated before a "release" it hurts and I think the pressure presses up against my already sore abdomen, lol. I am feeling better as the hours go on, though! What are you taking for pain? Is it Tylenol 3? I called the nurse at planned parenthood earlier today and she told me Tylenol 3 can actually cause bloating. But then again, after I told her about my DEATH CRAMPS she seemed to have an issue with believing those kinds of cramps would accompany medical abortion. Which really pissed me off and explained to me WHY I was given watered down information about cramping. When I went to the ER, those doctors and nurses gave me more accurate information on what to do and expect. Planned parenthood, the people that dish out these pills seem to have no REAL idea of the effects, either that or they are in serious denial.

Kayla,

The planned parenthood I went to actually told me the cramps could be pretty bad depending on the person. When did you have to go to the ER? I'm sorry to hear that.. As for me, I decided to tough it out and take regular Tylenol Extra Strength, then when those painful cramps after the misoprostol came on, I told my friend to fill my prescription for Tylenol 3. I never did use it as the cramps lightened up gradually after that initial pain.

My bloating is ridiculous!! I thought it was gas too, but I still have a very "full" feeling, you know how you can usually suck in your stomach, when I do it feels like it barely makes a difference and is pretty tender. Glad to hear your bloating is subsiding for the most part. I'm going to try cranberry juice as I read it could just be water retention from our hormone levels..hopefully it works. I hate this feeling!

hurtz22,

Mine came back a little yesterday when i took the tylenol 3 again. However, I talked to the nurse AGAIN and asked if it were ok for me to take Midol with the anti biotic and she said its fine. Midol relieves bloating and she said it is also ok to take laxatives with the anti biotic. She also suggested prunes. I feel like i am getting better day by day but i feel like I am healing slowly, I guess compared to others I have read here. However, I normally heal slowly from cuts and wounds so I suppose this is no different Sad I have my check up next week.

Kayla,

Yeah, I heal slowly too, it sucks! Sometimes I feel pretty normal, but other times I feel sore again. I think I am healing slowly from this too. I just want to be better already and get back to my usual everyday routines. I am taking the doxycycline, I have 2 more days left. The only thing I think you really can't take with this antibiotic is alcohol, since it thins the blood and will increase bleeding. Are you still bleeding a lot? I feel like mine slowed down, but it still feels pretty heavy sometimes.

I'm not bleeding a lot at all, almost really nothing. As the days go by, it gets less and less. And I hope this isn't (TMI) but the blood looks old, like a dark brownish color now. Not a lot at all. No more cramping or bloating (which the doxycycline was causing, also NIGHT SWEATS!) I did go out for the first time in WEEKS last night and had 2 glasses of wine, then came home and 2 hours later took my very last pill of the antibiotic, lol I hope it doesn't affect anything.

Doxycycline, i found out has a lot of side effects. My best friend is a pharmacist and I just told her about everything and she told me that Doxycycline Hyclate(sp?) can cause DEPRESSION, severe constipation, chest pains, headaches, fever, night sweats and so much more. I think I have experienced every side effect, lol and just happen to have taken my LAST pill. Ugh. Now time for the check up next week to see if things are all clear. I really hope so because i am so tired of taking pills and feeling tired. I took the Senotek laxative and boy did that help me sooo much with the the stomach bloating.

Tell me about it sister, I am sick of taking pills and feeling like this too. I'm so glad to be done taking those antibiotics because they were giving me a lot of those side effects as well. I think the headaches were the worse. I am still bloated, but maybe a laxative will work. I am starting to feel more regular since stopping the Doxycycline as well. I knew it had a lot of side effects, but I figured I'd just take it to be on the safe side anyway. My bleeding is slowing down but still fairly heavy. I just can't wait to be fully back to normal. Let me know how your follow-up goes..mine is on Friday the 11th. Hormone imbalance sucks! It is definitely not kind to me. haha

I also went through the same thing! After taking the 2nd pill in the cheek, I wanted to die, it was the worst pain/cramp in my life. I am supposed to take doxycycline as well, but I'm not sure what the side effects will be. Anyone experience anything from it? It's been a couple days since my medical abortion, but still spotting so I'm not sure when to take the doxycycline.

I'm getting tired of feeling nausea, bloating, vomiting, headaches, etc..I hope this medicine doesn't make it any worse.=/

hurtz22! Please tell me what your check up says. Today i was supposed to go in for my check up and unfortunately the clinic is closed on today for some reason and they re-scheduled me for Monday. NOW, ironically starting last night, i began to cramp a little and bleed again! Like pouring..then I passed tissues that scared the crap out of me. Why did it come back all of a sudden? Did this happen to you? Nothing i have seen so far as scared me up until just now when something passed that looked like it could be a "fetus" i dont know, it could've just been tissue..I froze up.

SimplyDvn,

I was instructed to take Doxycycline the very day i started the FIRST pill at the clinic and to take two per day (at different times) until they were all gone. You should start taking those anti biotic pills now. For me, they had tons of side effects but everyone's different.

Yes, yes I know I am updating this a lot. But hopefully it will be helpful to others in the future Wink

Anyway, got off the phone with the nurse and she said my bleeding and "tissue" isn't abnormal. She says it is actually just the uterine lining that developed around the fetus expelling. Whatever didn't expel during initial start of abortion and also could be my menstrual cycle as well. She was right when she said "its a bit disgusting" geez, there are things i have seen come out of me that i dont care to see again anytime soon and to think, i was just 5 weeks. I'm not even going to THINK what it looks like to have a FULL TERM BABY delivered and the placenta and all that. freaking SCARY!

KaylaB,

I've started to take doxycycline yesterday, thankfully I don't have any side effects from it. Because I was getting really tired of feeling crappy.haha. I believe that some women experience bleeding for at least 9-16 days or sometimes even for a month, I'm still spotting but not bleeding. I know how you feel about the "tissue". It happened twice for me, it's sad to know if it was a fetus but I'll be going for my check up on the 16th. I hope yours turn out well! =)

Just wondering if anyone has experienced what I am right now? I used the misoprostol on September 6th and then September 7. I really didn't have much pain or bleeding...I passed 2 1/2 dollar sized clots and really haven't had all that much bleeding. Now today Sept 13 I have a very tender abdomen. I was wonder what's the problem. I wasn't given antibiotic to take when I went to the clinic. I was only 5weeks along. Just curious if anyone else expierenced the tenderness. Is it just bloat or might I have an infection.

I think the clots are normal, I've had two. If your abdomen is still tender by a couple days then you should let your clinic know to see if it's normal or not. I know for your that taking antibiotics makes you feel bloated, it makes me feel bloated also. Most of your body part gets tender, as well as breasts. Call your clinic if your lower abdomen is sore, that's what it says on the form. GL

This has been one heck of an expierence for me. I have my follow-up on the 19th I'll let ya know how it goes. I hope that everything passed! I'm tired of the waiting...since Sept 1st it has been a waiting game. I was on an emotional rollercoaster for 13 days now. Now I have this tenderness and bloat...so of course again comes the anxiety of ...is something wrong? I just can't wait till it's all over. I can tell you guys feel the same way. Thank goodness for these posts. They have really helped me.

Hello, for me it took a couple of days I took the pills on a Monday night and again on Tuesday night I hardly had any bleeding (like a light period) I called my doctor and she said some people experience "delayed passage" it wasn't until Thursday that I passed a clot that actuall had grayish color and wasn't just like a blood clot. It is a long process for me. If you need anything I'll be here. Just send a reply. Good luck to ya everything is gonna be just fine. It's just a waiting game for some and instant for others.
